Re: Exhaust Fans

I installed a 300CFM in my basement after my first attempt at a bathroom fan failed. Now I run them both, about 400 CFM total. It is withstandable when we play cards, but it does get quite smokey when all 6 or 7 of us get going at the same time.

When the basement is finished, it will only be an area about 500 sq ft. The ceilings will also be a little low, 7'6" max. So I'm looking at about 3500 CF.

I think I am going to add another 300 or 450 CFM fan and I'm pretty sure that will be enough. I believe the ideal condition is to move all of the air every 5 minutes, but don't quote me on that. Some states that still have smoking in establishments require that all the air be moved in 3 minutes.

I also have a 1" gap under my basement door. There are no air ducts in my basement. This creates a good enough negative pressure to draw air from upstairs so the smoke doesn't seep upstairs. I may have to increase that gap or find an outside air source when I add the additional fan.
