help, i don't know what's wrong

I posted a while ago about some bad tobacco, that i tried to rehydrate. About a month or two ago, i got some wild cherry tobacco. At first it smoked great, but i haven't been smoking much lately. I smoked twice this weekend, and both time i was pretty unsatisfied. Basically what happens is i can tell/feel the tongue bite right after getting it lit. As i smoke more it gets worse. I'll admit and say some may be due to improper smoking technique, but it should not be this prevalent. The pipe i'm using was used by my friends grandfather and has some good wear. I'm wondering if it's the quality of the tobacco (maybe dried out too long?) the pipe, or just my smoking skills thats causing this unpleasentness. I use the 3 level/softness packing technique

Thanks,
Bryce
