+10 to The Song of Ice and Fire series.. He REALLY needs to write the next book but it is an incredible series. I have gotten a few people hooked on this one who aren't normal fantasy readers as well.

A Game of Thrones is the first book, and when you play the game of thrones you either win or you die...

Roots by Alex Haley and The Godfather by Mario Puzo are in my top three but the best books I ever read are the works of James Herriot. All Creatures Great and Small and its subsequent titles had a great impact on my life. Amazing books that stand the test of time.

Catcher in the rye (hated it in high school, read it 3 times since

The bukoski books in order ..... ham on rye , post office, then women read out of order it doesn't show the progression of his disdain for everything besides its essentially child hood, adult life, older life so it makes sense to follow

He really, really does. I've heard the next book was delayed until 2012. I'm now convinced that the world will end before fans get to read that book.

On the upside, though, the HBO television series is looking pretty good.

OK, I know I've already posted in this thread, but since we're talking...

Anyone even remotely open to the idea of fantasy, do yourself and read The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. It is the first book in the Wheel of Time series. The whole series is just incredibly good.

    Seriously.

    Do it.

I'm currently reading the series of "The Rangers Apprentince" by John Flanagan. It is my favorite series since LOTR. Along the same lines but with a more realistic cast of charicters.

I can't believe I left off Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.

May still be the most enjoyable book I ever read.

I really enjoyed The Count of Monte Cristo
