Books, like cigars, can have a different effect when/where you read/smoke them. Some books I've read were 'the best' for that particular time in my life.
Having said that, a Top 10 of 'the best' for me would have to include:

The Old Man and the Sea
Another Roadside Attraction, by Tom Robbins
    Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn
    Moby Dick
    Lonesome Dove, McMurtry
    The Dharma Bums, Kerouac
The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Dan Millman

    anything by Jim Harrison
    anything by Charles Bukowski
many things by Hunter S. Thompson

    Nonfiction:
About Face by David Hackworth was my guide as an NCO in the army.

Against the Wind by Ron Ayres - about the Ironbutt Rally.

The Art of the Infinite: The Pleasures of Mathematics by Robert and Ellen Kaplan

    ANYTHING by Anthony Bourdain

    Fiction:
Michael Moorcock's books when I was younger.
    LOTR of course.

I'm a bit of a bibliophile - hard to pin things down, really.

My favorites are by Raymond E Feist. I will list two books of a series but they are all worth reading.
Magician Apprentice and master magician. Both 2 great books that start a great series of books. My favorite by far.

Since I read trashy novels most of the time, I have to say the first book I read that made me think was back around 1974, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig.

The only other book that remains in my limited awareness is The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman

Right now, it's a three-way tie, for me. In no particular order:

The Stand (Unabridged) - Stephen King
    A Wrinkle in Time - Madeline L'Engle
The Killer Angels - Michael Shaara
    What can I say?

George Orwell's "Animal Farm." Very wise and telling tale of removing and replacing the old bad aristocracy only to become worse, oneself, once you take their place.
