Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

Disclaimer: This is not really a cigar question. Don't read this if you like serious cigar questions.

I saw this crusty looking old codger puffing a big stogie while pulling away from a traffic light on a beasty touring bike and thought, "What a dope. That looks like a perfect way to get hot ashes stuck on your eyeball". Still, it bothered me - why hadn't I tried motorcycling with a cigar? Cowardice? Intelligence? Fear of getting smooshed, not paying attention to the road?

So here is a Goldwing roadtest report: windshield full up, wrap-around shades, no crosswind, speed 65mph - yeah, it's doable... but much more enjoyable under 60mph. It seems like an OK around town thing - you get more smiles at stop lights with a fat cigar than you do with the Billy-Bob teeth and a fat grin. Have not tried the Billy Bob teeth and a cigar at the same time. That combination could be photo of the month.

I find box pressed Oliva Grand Maduro holds a very tight ash and has enough body to taste good at speed; no major relighting issues - it's an excellent urban or sub-65mph cigar.

Anybody have other speed-test data on cigars? Bungie jumping; skydiving; offshore racing; motocross?

LOL. This is where a flip front helmet really shines. It works with or without a cigar.

Why would you want to smoke a cigar and ride a motorcycle at the same time? Doesn't sound too safe to me. BTW, I've owned a Kawa and Truimph.

Sounds like the premise for an in-depth research project.

Unsafe? It's gotta be unsafe, but way safer than my sweetie* talking on her cellfone zooming up I-95.

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

Half the fun of riding is stopping. Ride someplace cool, enjoy the ride. Stop someplace cool, enjoy the stop. It could be a major safety issue, if a hot spark got in the wrong place. I had a bee or hornet or something sting me once, inside my helmet, at 70 miles per hour. I still don't know how I got that thing stopped without killing myself or somebody else. I like to enjoy my cigars in peace, while relaxing and talking with someone interesting. Or smoking slowly in total peace and quiet. Forty years of putting it into the wind on big road bikes. Never smoked a cigar on one though, so what do I know?

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

Not meaning to flog a dead horse, but I said smoking and biking looked like something for a nitwit - so, naturally, I had to try it. I confess that bike management takes away from the joy of a nice smoke and that there are safer places to light up. HOWEVER - the experiment did lead to development of a nice (at speed and general purpose) cigar holder.

It's good for leaving a lit cigar, temporarily, about anywhere. Cost - not much if you have 'gator clips, wire and teenage daughters.

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

I prob would never smoke while riding. The uneven burn & ashes everywhere would just bug the shit outta me. Wearing a full faced helmet would also prevent this action. I have friends who smoke cigarettes while riding & they look retarded! Smoking while riding is just as safe as talking on your cell while driving. LOL!

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

I also had occasion to test this. Rode my bike through Missouri down into Arkansas and had to take a ferry across the lake. There was a wait for the ferry to start and I figured I had time. The Sancho Panza was only half done by the time the ferry was finished and I wanted to get going. About all I can say is it was better than throwing the cigar away. I think I will avoid it in the future. Just too much work, especially on the twistys.

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

tried it---once. Had to keep the cigar in my mouth all the time cause I was riding around town and needed both hands for shifting and changing speeds. Kept getting smoke and ashes in my eyes, and I don't like to get the cigar soggy with spit. That was the last time I tried it while riding!

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

PSD4 and a Harley. Speeds: 25-65mph.
Bucket and shades for head gear.
I had to keep the thing in my teeth most of the time for fear of it blowing away (out of my mouth). when not using my teeth just holding it was fine. It did go out also. Having a ronson $3 cigar lighter while riding is a god send. I was able to relight at red lights.

Smoking for the shear relaxing enjoyment of a cigar......not really able to. the wind is too much of a factor. It is my opinion that you don't really enjoy a cigar as much when you are sitting in a chair with the wind blowing let alone riding a scoot.

I did nub the PSD4 after lighting it again when I got to my destination. As you probably assumed the tip was somewhat mauled by my teeth but still VERY VERY smokable.
It's fun but as someone said previously, it's best when tooling around town.

Just my 2c

B

ps. what's a full faced helmet hahahahahaha j/k

Re: Cigars & Motorcycles - Speed Test

I sometimes ride and smoke a cigar, usually on more peaceful, quiet country roads at a slower speed. I was introduced to this by a boyfriend in LV who does it all the time. Now when I visit and I ride with him we light up and enjoy the ride!
