dB Drag Racing and cars with big speakers

In high school, My brother used to have a beater with 2 15 inch subs in his trunk. One speaker was from radio shack, and the other was an old worn out Kicker. He used 2 100watt equalizers (no amps) to push the subs. Needless to say, his sound SUCKED!
When I joined the military, I was still single and had most of my hearing, so I decided to put some money in my black Sonoma extended cab. I got one 12 inch JBL sub, and used my stock speakers as mids and hi's. The sub was encased in a customer build pyramid shaped box that was custom made by the audio shop. I had a now obsolete Sony 160 watt amp (can't remember the model). I went to one competition just for grins and wound out cranking out 132db...which is pretty rad for one sub.
Anyways, I'm noticing renewed interest in this through online forums (duh) and local venues. I know many places have outlawed this and have created a sound pollution ordnance. For the record, I have no interest in getting back into it, just though I'd start a thread to see if anyone else did, or does this now.

I used to do this years ago. My last competition in 2000, I hit 155.0 with 6 JL subs in a 97 GMC Jimmy. The rear hatch of the glass was actually "bowing" out.

why did you quit? Did you sell all your stuff? I remember trading that Sonoma in (audio equipment included) for a brand new Mustang...which was traded for something else. My memory sucks.

I grew out of that phase. I was sick of not having any cargo space, worrying about having my stereo equipment stolen, and spending my money on it.

I still install 1 sub in my vehicles (except my Mustang), but I tune it for good sound, not to rattle the glass.

Much more into sound quality here than sound level. I've got two CDT ten inchers in sealed custom boxes built into the rear quarter panels. Nice clean bass, plenty loud for me and no rattling.

HU is Alpine, amp is audison and the rest of the speakers are CDT Gold series. Everything is integrated as to look stock or hardly be visible from the outside.

Re: dB Drag Racing and cars with big speakers

I never went for the db part of sound, but I did opt for the sq(sound quality) side. I have a 4 channel Alpine V12 bridged to 2 pushing 60 watts to the Boston component speakers in the front and I have a 2 channel Alpine V12 bridged to one channel pushing around 600 watts to the trunk mounted 12" sub. The car is a '92 Honda Prelude and it gets damn loud in there, but no distortion.

I never understood the point in putting thousands of dollars worth of subs and amps in a vehicle just to burp it once in a while. Hell, some guys have installed plexi-glass so the windows don't blow out.

Re: dB Drag Racing and cars with big speakers

Worked at an Audio Store while going to college. We were sponsored by Kicker and Alpine....seperate cars. Had a Ford Focus with an 18" SoloBaric pushed by 15000 watts. It would complicate your breathing quite a bit.
