Poll: Favorite HD mill of all time!

Whats your favorite Harley Davidson Engine of all time? I honestly think the evo sportster motors were the best. Excellent design. The 4 cam set up is far better than a single cam Evo cause your push rod angles are alot straighter. The trans is part of the case so there is no give in the primary....great for racing.

I built by hand the bike in my avatar, it's a custom built around a 1965 Panhead motor with a shovelhead 4speed gearbox. I love the really mechanical sound of the older motors.

Maybe not the "best", but the coolest is the knucklehead. No contest. Look at it! It's very ... serious. Yeah, it just looks like a very serious piece of machinery.

I really like the Knuckle but have always loved the Panhead. There's just something about it. If I ever build another bike it will have one of the "new" style Panhead motors in it.

I like 'em all. I prefer the reliability of the evo engine, but I like pans and shovels for the sound. I've never been around a knuckle.

Re: Poll: Favorite HD mill of all time!

When I was in college I got to co-op for The Motor Company. I never really liked HD after I got the run around from a dealer back in the late 90's. But at about the same time as I was getting ready to start to Kettering University (formally General Motors Institute) I saw the Discovery special on the V-Rod and was so impressed with the engineering and such that I had to get the Harley gig for co-op and I got it.
I did rotational quarters at the York Final Assembly, Kansas City Final Assembly and the PDC (Product Development Center) in Milwalkee. And I had a blast. I learned a lot about the company that I would never have learned except as a co-op.

Wille G. Davidson saw me park my Valkyrie in front of the PDC and asked me what it would take for me to want to ride a HD insead of a Honda and I said I needed more power and the smootness of the flat-6 and we talked for a few more minutes, that was pretty cool. Typically, when you co-op with a company and you do a good job, then full time employment is usually offered...it was not meant to be....I had to switch majors to Management due to my conflict with Calculus of various levels.
It was a great time.

I like the 1.5 Liter flat 6 from Honda

Re: Poll: Favorite HD mill of all time!

While the Honda F6 is a great motor no doubt, Harley riders generally don't want an engine that smooth. Harleys have a unique character that the makers of metric bikes just haven't been able to duplicate, even in their cruiser lines.

I love the looks of the knuckleheads, and rode a few shovels, but I have to say the evo seems to combine both the ride of the older bikes and the reliability of new technology really well. On long trips I have to admit the twin cam is smooth.
