I retrofitted my Oasis to use Superabsorbent Polymers, but there is no reason I can think of why the RH beads won't work. The nature of beads and the way they function is such that they work better when they are spread thinner so that more surface area is exposed to air (better for absorption and adsorption).

Yes use a putty knife to slip between the two halves. Go to a place that sells screens to (Make sure its the plastic kind) to help hold in the beads. And to avoid spilling your beads everywhere work on a towel!!

I just did this yesterday using a butter knife. Not the best but it worked. Don't worry too much about breaking the plastic and use more force.

Re: Replacing Foam w/Beads

I did mine, and it just popped apart with a little pressure from my hands. The way my humidor works is that there is a Spanish cedar holder for the humidifier that is like a 1" divider in the bottom of my humi. I replace the foam with beads and found that the humidifier didn't hold that many beads. Then I got a bigger piece of panty hose and filled with beads and just put that where the humidifier went. It holds about twice the beads and I couldn't be happier. I also threw in about 4 1oz sticks throughout the humi and the recharge time is magnificent. The RH stays right at 65% perfect. I heart beads.

I also changed the pucks in my two smaller humis. The plastic screens are a must. Just putting beads in a puck is a must IMO. You wouldn't think it, but the panty hose are in the way and take up too much space in the humidifier.

Re: Replacing Foam w/Beads

I just used a screwdriver. What I also did was buy a clear Madelaine (sp?) rectangle humidifier emptied it and popped the screen out used the material from a Heartfelt bought bag as the cover and put in the Heartfelt beads. The main purpose was to get the clear humidifier so I can see the color of the beads and when I need to put water in or alternatively in the summer when I need to dry it out a bit. It was a bit of a pain and not cheap but it was the best use of space and I always know if I need water no guessing like I previously did with the solid humidifiers when I had beads in them.

Re: Replacing Foam w/Beads

I guess I got lucky, mine unscrewed. I put some beads in a small piece of pantyhose, tied it up and screwed it back together.

Edit: Ah, read a little closer and saw you were talking about the rectangular one, mine was round. Doh.

I was successful in prying open the humidifcation device with a little eyeglass screwdriver, but you make an excellent point about having a clear humidifier. Mine's black ... I can't win. I guess I need to invest in some calibration bags and make sure my hygrometes are set correctly. I'll be doing this again (X2) as I just won a couple more Zino hunis on eBay.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I appreciate it. The knowledge (and friendly advice) here is fantastic.

I know ... I know. There's something about a cooler that just doesn't feel right to me. Maybe I should save for a retail display humidor -- like a 5000 count or something.
