Crack in you glass top humi... no worries, just fix it

Well as most of you know I received my very first bomb from Navydoc… and it was HUGE! He sent me a humidor, beads, a palio cutter, and some sticks. But the rough nature of the mail up here in the arctic caused a crack in the glass of the humidor. So I got many recommendations from the brothers and sisters here on how to fix it… well it’s fixed (as far as I can tell anyway)

I decided to use kitchen and bath silicon, due it its mildew resistance. The tools I broke out were simple: a caulking gun, the silicon, masking tape, a utility knife and a putty knife.

First I cleaned the glass, I should have used some acetone but I did not have any, so I stuck to soap and water. Then I taped off the inside of the humidor, so any fumes from the silicon would not leach into the humi.

Then I taped off the crack on the top side. I used a few pieces as the crack was not straight. It is hard to see in the pic as the tape from the underside of the glass blends in with the tape from the top… but trust me I taped it.

Next I loaded the gun, and got the silicon ready. I ran a small bead down the crack. I left about an inch on either end of the crack so I would not get any silicon on the wood.

I wet the edge of the putty knife, you may not need to do this but I do every time I work with silicon… I don’t know why? I ran the knife at a 45% angle down the crack spreading the silicon into the crack and into the tape.

I gave it a few hours and pulled the tape off, leaving a nice line of silicon down the crack. I left the tape on the inside of the glass for three days, I wanted to make sure the silicon was cured… may have been overkill BUT these and my cigars we are talking about!

And now I have to season the beast. And hope that leaving the space on the edges does not allow to much humidity to escape.

Well I know I have thanked Navydoc before but I want to do so again, after working on this humidor I realized again what a generous gift it was. Thank you sir.

So for other brothers and sisters out there that have a humidor with a crack in the glass and don’t want to or can’t get it fixed… there is hope. This fix took very little time, and did not require much in the way of tools. If you don’t have a chalking gun or putty knife, you can buy them for under $20 and if you don’t have masking tape… then you should hide you head in the sand!

Nice piece of engineering work there That's a pretty damn clever solution, if I may say so!

Re: Crack in you glass top humi... no worries, just fix it

I forgot to post this... I did it earlier this week. I have been seasoning it now for three days... the humidity if 73% right now. Looking good, I have nuked the bowl of water three times now and put it in the humidor. I know I should not be opening and closing the humi while I season it (or at least Boveda tells me not to) but I want to make sure my new seam holds!!

Nice work! Now its time to put the beads/sheets in there with your hygro and see if it maintains. Then time to fill and show us some more PRON!

Re: Crack in you glass top humi... no worries, just fix it

I always wondered about using silicone for sealing things like this. Most silicone has acetic acid in it and tends to leave a strong vinegar smell when cooking off. I am just curious to see if the vinegar smell will transfer to the cigars. And, yes, it's a good repair.

Nice repair work!

If it seals well, I wouldn't even replace it....it's a story to tell with each new person who sees the humi.

I was afraid of that also, thats why I taped the inside of the crack as well. I am still seasoning it, 64% today, but so far no smell that I notice.

The more I look at it now, the more I agree. As long as my cigars will me safe... she stays the way she is. "tis only a flesh wound"

Yes sir, you got to get creative when you got nothing... what do they say "necessity is the mother of invention". I find myself Frankensteining something around here every week or so.

Nice repair job. I think if it were mine, I would replace the glass. Glass is not very expensive.

I'm sure he thought about popping down to the local hardware store...

I would guess it is at least 150 miles away.
