Power supply to run DC fans (help needed)

I have begun my new Vinotemp project. I have 2 brand new wine cellars thanks to targets sale today and am now in the process of designing the interiors. I would like to use a few DC 12V Fans inside. I think I will have 2 for sure maybe up to 4. I will be building them into the shelfs that I will be building. I am thinking 2 in the bottom for sure and 1 or 2 at the top.

One that I am looking at is this one: Evercool 40 x 40 x 10mm.

If anyone out there has any experience hooking up 12V fans to a power supply, I could use some help or guidance.

Thanks,
Chas

Question Re: Power supply to run DC fans (help needed)

What I did was cut the wires between the fan and the connector then splice in as much length of wire for me to reach where I needed to reach...i.e. out the drain up to a mid-point between the 2 vinotemps. I then ran it off a power supply that I got using the link in the sticky for this forum.

the timer i got was the intratec (?) 7 day,14 event (on and off) digital timer. I have it set to come on for 3 min every 2hrs.

check the sticky for the sites lots of help there.

Hope that this helped. oh 4 fans might be a little to much air volume moving might cause the sticks to dry out. I used 2 80mm moving 32cfm of air. one facing up one down.

Regards,

Re: Power supply to run DC fans (help needed)

I had a couple 6V power supplies laying around (pack rat) and I used one to drive 2 small computer fans. Used a timer and it works great.

Check out the sticky or my thread:

good luck.

I followed the link in the sticky and am confused by the power supply.
It has a 4 prong connector to plug in the fans but the fans only have 3 wires and 1 is for speed control.

As for volume, the fans I mentioned are real small and only move 5.75 CFM each. I too would run them on a timer with just short bursts.

OH I understand now
the fan you are looking at has the three wire configuration...there are some on that site with the 4 prong configration...or just use the converter that is on the same page in the right column.

But with the three wire ones I don't know how you would hook them all together. with the 4 prong there is an extra plug to wire them all together with.
hope this a help,

Chas
It has a 4 prong connector as it's designed for computer use - so it does 5v and 12v. The yellow wire will do 12v - the red 5v and the two blacks are grounds. #1 should be the 12v - #2 and 3 the grounds and #4 5v - but use a meter to check it just in case I'm using drugs at the moment -

That one is moving 36 CFM compared to the 5.75 CFM on the ones I'm looking at plus its a lot bigger.

I am trying to go low profile so I can build it into the inside shelf/drawer slide piece I am designing.
Hard to explain but I will share plenty of pics

I think I have it figured out but I want to try a local electronics supply house before I start buying stuff and splicing wires.

Thanks,
Chas

I saw that but not being an electric guru I was afraid to start tapping into circuits and cutting wires on something new. I picked up a $20 12 volt power supply today from the local electronics store that will easily run everything I have planned. Fans get ordered next week (pay day, dang I am running out of money quick this month ), a few more tray details to work out and then let the sawdust fly and the camera start clicking.

I did a post with pics on how to build a wall wart/fan setup.
I'll try to find it for ya, Chuck.

Spoke too soon, I see you're good already.
Did you see the power supply box I built?

Yep I think I remember both

Depending on the timer I go with I am going to try to mount everything on the back. Once its all set there is no reason to ever give it another thought. As it is planned now at least the top 2 maybe 3 wire racks will stay for wine (depends on where the fan in the back ends up being). On the bottom will be a shelf elevated to accommodate a bead bag from shilala Industries, a collection pan (for the condensation) being built from black acrylic and 2 fans mounted in the shelf to pull from the bottom and blow up the front. Directly below the wire racks will be 3 maybe 4, 2 inch or so drawers built in for singles. Each tray will be slotted and equipped with some beads. The whole unit that holds these trays will be somewhat sealed to help eliminate direct flow on the sticks from the fans and help reduce rapid RH changes from the door opening/closing and the vino cycling. On the top of that unit, mounted on the back, will be 2 more small fans that blow air down the back of the unit. All fans will be wired together and run for a few minutes ever 90 minutes or so off the timer. To finish off the top of that part will be 1/8 inch thick mirror to add a classy look when there are wine bottles in it. The remaining area between the bottom and the trays will be used for boxes.
