Jar Humidors...any downsides I should know about?

I did pull the trigger on two jar humidors earlier this week (in the mail). These will be my first humidors, so I'm pretty unschooled as far as they go.

I know there will be no flavor enhancements via interaction with the cedar, and I read that there's a chance of having the inside too humid, but is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks.

You can possibly damage the sticks by storing them on end like that. Also, I've heard of some folks having problems getting the RH stabilized.

There is no where to put a digital hygrometer. How will you measure your RH?

Here's one that's cigar sized...it should do nicely, scroll down towards the bottom of the page.

You can easily damage the foot and head when dropping them in there. Just be careful.

I rpefer a typical box style humidor. I keep my Tat Black Jar in my cabinet.

Do you think a bit of cloth covered felt would make a suitable cushion?

Eventually I'll get a box style. I just have to find a decent local place to buy one. I'd rather see it in person than to buy one based off of one or two pictures online.

You can also just sit the jar on its side to alleviate the problem of them standing up.

Re: Jar Humidors...any downsides I should know about?

Tampa humidors is a good place to get one online, they back thier products if there are any defects with your item when it gets to you. You can also try taboo. They give out freebies once in a while if you order a certain amount. It will be MUCH cheaper online as most retailers will charge at least double if not triple for a humidor you can buy online. I would stay away from a cloth as it could make your smokes a little damp. I like the idea of putting it on a side (in a sort of wine "V" craddle hold). It has been said that cigars may age odd (obviously your not aging your stock) when they are on thier end due to variance in RH. I am sure you will upgrade soon.

Re: Jar Humidors...any downsides I should know about?

Well, I figured since I already have enough cigars on order to nearly fill both jar humidors, I dropped some cash on a 100-cigar humidor.

It's too easy to get lots of cigars....especially when you know you'll have a place to store them. Once that one is stable, I'll probably look into filling it up.

See I was right 1 day after saying I thought it was to small it "became" to small. For my next predicition your 100 count will "become to small".

Don't worry 2 years from now your 100 gal cooler will be to small. Just remember you heard it hear first.

And congradulation on finding the slope.

Yep, the slope has been discovered in many hobbies....I'm still paying on a limited-run (#14/50) spalted-maple top electric guitar...this was just after I got another limited run goldtop V electric.

Yep, guys and their toys....we never stop playing, we just get pricier ones

Just buy a cooler and beads already. I tried the 20 ct. humi, then the 150 and within a month or two I was filling a cooler. No sense in fighting it, just go big from the get go

I use about 40 humi jars.
Here's a thread on how I make them.
They absolutely kick ass.
