Very much personal preference but I enjoy my Palio.

Re: Cutters

Cutters are pretty much like everything in life. You get what you pay for. I started with a cheapy but it quickly became dull. I bought a Xicar and then a Palio. Both are excellent. You won't be disappointed with either. If you only have funds for one, go with the Palio.

You should also head over to the New Gorilla Forum and introduce yourself. Get involved in trades and PIFs. CS has a lot to offer. Read the stickies and cigar/accessory reviews. There is a wealth of information here.

Re: Cutters

A nice cutter is IMO part of the experience. ALOT of folks here Love the Palio. I use the Xicar MTX scissor style. I also just trimmed an $8.50 Montecristo with my SAK. Nothing like low tech once in a while.

Good move, cheap cutters that aren't that sharp can damage the wrapper when cutting. It's best to just go ahead and shell out the cash, it's a one time purchase, since most of the premium cutters come with lifetime warranties (unless you lose it).

Re: Cutters

You should hit up the search for cutter reviews. I myself did one, and I would say the palio. $35 dollars, lifetime warranty, cheapter than the xikar with a better cut IMO

Re: Cutters

If you're the type of person that misplaces/leaves your sun glasses, lighters etc. you may want to get a cheap cutter at first.
If not I recommend the Palio or Xikar. I have both and wouldn't get rid of either of them. The Palio ($40) is my go to, anytime cutter that I can always depend on. I have a Xikar XI3 Exotic wood ($80) that is great. With Xikar cutter's you have got to get the proper technique down or you may find a "bump" at the head of your stogie, so practice. It's also got a lot of PodFactor when going out on the town.

I also have a Xikar XI3 Mammoth ($399.99, my brother gave it to me as a gift). It's pretty useless, just due to the fact that it NEVER leaves the house and I'm scared I'll damage it.

Tons of info/reviews on this topic in the search. Check them out, very detailed reviews.

any tips on proper xikar technique? i've had lots of trouble getting a clean cut, and what do you mean by PodFactor?

IMO the palio cuts better, but i prefer holding the xikar

Re: Cutters

I found I have to add more downward pressure on the xikar to get rid of that nub: Index finger on top, pinky on bottom and other 3 to squeeze.

Re: Cutters

Though I love my palio, I have really started to enjoy using a punch. I think I'll be investing in a nice one soon.
