Anyone know if I could pick up a decent hygrometer at Wal-Mart for my Vino? I am trying to get it ready so I can order beads and shelves and would like to get a decent one for it. Any suggetions would be appreciated.

It's pretty much luck of the draw. I bought an AccuRite at WalMart and it's the only one out of my four hygros that's accurate.

Maybe, but most likely not if you go for one of their cheaper offerings... What ever you decide to pick up I suggest you do a salt test or measure error using a Bodeva kit. I have heard of some of the Wally world hygro's running
+/- 12% which is not good imho.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

My 3 hygrometers from Walmart are consistently 4% off - I can live with that for the price.

My LaCrosse hygrometers are dead on and pretty cheap (http://www.partshelf.com/ps-ws-9400u.html). I got them for $5.00 on Woot.com

These at Target look promising as well: (http://www.target.com/Holmes-Digital.../dp/B000I11IBQ

I have a Hygroset adjustable which was +1% with both the salt and Boveda tests.

The Wal-Mart Accurite was +6% with both tests.

They were both tested together at the same ambient temp.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

Same as the above ones, I've got the Acu Rite, 4% too low and I'm pretty sure the thermostat is wrong; it's showing 85 when it's 70 at most. Still, for $8 and no shipping or waiting, I would definately purchase another one.

Mines off by 12%, as long as you test it and know. I just have it recorded in the old noggin and I'm good to go.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

Most of the ones that I've looked at at Walmart are not that accurate or cheap. The packages will tell you what the tolerance is. I would look at some on-line places first. Cbid would be a good place. If you order it from where you get your stogies you can save on shipping.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

If you are needing a humi the size of the Vino than you most likely have a decent amount of sticks you are storing.

I wouldn't trust any amount/collection of cigars to a Wal-mart hygrometer that wasn't designed for use in a humidor.

I use the Western Caliber III in my 150ct display, Vinotemp, and 100qt cooler. All 3 of the WC3's read 100% accurately and I don't have to second guess anything or babysit them.

The extra $10-$15 per hygrometer is well worth it in my opinion for piece of mind.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

Since I started using the Heartfelt beads I have no need for a hygrometer anymore.

Re: Hygrometer at Wal-Mart

Picked up one of the Accu-Rite hygrometers today. I have it in the salt test as we speak. Testing it along side my Caliber III and another generic digital. Will post results after the test is over.
