Re: Humidors... don't you just toss in the stogies?
I live in LA and it can get pretty hot in our apartment. Any suggestions?
I could use the bathroom downstairs that is not used. It's dark and typically cooler than the remainder of the apartment. I think the other night it was 80 according to the thermostat and my gf would go nuts if I left the thing on for some cigars. Currently the cigars I have are in a sealed Jar, looks just like the jar humi's you see for sale.. but without the humidfier part. |

Re: Humidors... don't you just toss in the stogies?
LA Louisiana or L.A. Los Angeles....I'm in L.A. and you just described today.
![]() You guys get more humidity out there, that's for sure. Something you wanna watch out for for sure so you're definitely on the right track. The nice thing about this here slope is that you can (honest) really control how fast you slide down based on your budget. Because of overflow, I turned a tupperware container into a makeshift humidor adding some cedar cigar wrappers (the ones you find wrapped around some cigars) and a humidification device, be it a 65% disc from the B&M, a cigar box humidipac or whatever. You can even turn your jar into one by adding a humidification device of some sort. The downstairs bathroom sounds good....although I can't blame you for not wanting to show off the Diablo in a better part of the apartment at the risk of higher temperatures. Guys do it all the time (have humidors in warm temps); I guess I've heard of guys with cooleradors (a cooler turned into a humidor) adding ice to the chest in extreme temps. Since I'm in the same sort of temp. conditions as you, I was really torn about what to do. Ideally, you want a temperature AND humidity controlled environment. But budget often keeps you from being able to have both. There are independent cooling units you can get but that seems a little extreme. I'd just say go with your setup; try to monitor the temp best you can and move the humidor down to the bathroom on really tough high temp. days and just enjoy the smokes. Eventually, you'll outgrow the 300-count and move on to something like a Vinotemp which I just bought predicting I'd outgrow my 50-count and I'm at about 100 already. The Vinotemp is a 28-bottle wine fridge that has a different cooling mechanism than a normal fridge and therefore won't dry out your cigars like a normal fridge. A lot of guys on here customize their Vinos; I'm in the process of tricking mine out. The reason I bought the Vino is because it was getting very warm out here in L.A. and I was concerned (perhaps overly) about the temp. I didn't want to have to worry and the Vino on clearance at Target for $139 was a steal as far as a temp & humidity controlled humidor goes. You'd be paying upwards of $1,000 for a 'cigar humidor' of the like. I know I haven't helped by giving you a solution about the heat but just keep the things I mentioned in mind and you'll be fine. Have fun! |
