seasoning issues HELP!

ok guys,
I am in need of some asstiance. I recently bought a humidor from CI. its a 300 ct humidor (cant really fit 300 but anyways) I have seasond it by placing shot glass in it for probably 3 weeks maybe longer and also salt tested hydrometer, I have monitored it and at first i didnt think it was working but as every has said it started to drop. once it got to 66 I took the shot glass out put (1) 1/2 lb bag of Heartfelt 65% humidity beads and 3 of their "large" round puckish looking 65% tubes. So I go away for a few days and get back and my humidity is now back up to 74ish

Do I give it a few more days and see if the % will drop? should I take it all back out and re season it?

can someone help me? Please Help me!

Kris

Re: seasoning issues HELP!

Just leave your beads in there for a few more days and they should help level it off.

I did a calculation of a typical 300 count and you shouldn't need any more than a 1/2 pound. Are the beads saturated? How close to the beads is the hygro?

Re: seasoning issues HELP!

ya, I saturated the beeds the % recomended (I think it was 70%) and the beads are on the bottom and the hydro is on the lid. I felt kinda like that was more than enough beads which is why I figured I'd thow it out to you guys see if you had any input.

The humi is at least half full, not sure if that matters but a guy at tinder box tell me that for the humi to work properly it had to be at least half full.

This is my humi

Yeah, as RadioMan said it sure sounds like you have too many humdifiers in there. Also, as already mentioned you might be saturating the beads 100% with water which leaves them no room to absorb excess moisture. You can blow dry them for a while to take some of the moisture out.

Ignore him, it's such a BS line. I don't know how it got started but one day when at JR in Manhattan a co-worker was looking at their humidors and one of their "genius" sales guys comes over and tells him you need to have a humidor at least 3/4 full for it to "work". It's not correct by any means. I've ran my humi with as low as 3 sticks at one point and it still held 66% humidity or so with a 70% humidifier. Sure, having the humi more full will keep the humidity level a bit more constant but you don't have to have it full to a certain amount.

I would take the 3 pucks out and use them for your next humidors. Then just wait for the 1/2 pound to calm down and it will. The guy at the Tinder Box is not exactly correct. A more full humidor will stay more stable but it will work if you have one cigar in it or if it's full.

Yeah, what Rev said.

Re: seasoning issues HELP!

As I have been playing with beads for only a month...I find that the beads work best when there is a closer to 50/50 white/clear...YEP!!!!
I said 50/50/

I just got off the many puck merry go round and reduced the number of bead pucks I had in my box. That helped also to lower the humididty.
I now, over the past 10 days have a stable rh of 72%. Since 70 is my target. this is good.

THE BEADS HOLD A SURPRISING AMOUNT OF MOISTRE.
You're doing the right things. If the rh doesn't come down in the next few days ....by a few %...then try some drier ratio of beads.

VERY NICE HUMIDOR..
Tom

Re: seasoning issues HELP!

Thanks very much guys I really appreciate the quick responses!

Anyways I took the 3 pucks out and will be saving them for my next humi as recommended which I must say I have a feeling isn’t too far away. Believe it or not I have already been looking to see what kind of coolers I have around here. There are so many different brands I want to try its just so much fun. I am thinking with in the next few weeks im going to make my first box purchase. I see why everyone says get a BIG humi first!

So now I just have the 1/2 lb of beads. we will see how the % acts over the next few days.

I will keep you guys updated.

I'm actually ordering my first box this coming week - a box of Padron 4000's. I had two Padron's back to back Friday night while on a very long phone call and it was just so amazing I said, "OK, I'm ordering that larger humi so I can get a box of them and my other favorite cigar".
