Walmart Hygrometers

I noticed that Walmart sells two different el cheapo hygrometers. The least expensive being the $7 white model and an $8 model that appears to be much better. I have purchased two of the white ones and one of the $8 black ones. I'm coming up on 36 hrs. for salt testing the two white ones. I drilled holes in the back cover to increase air flow on these. One appears to be steady at 73% and the other fluctuates between 71% and 72%. I will salt test the black one next. I'll be interested in seeing if the more expensive unit comes in closer to 75%. Funny thing is I can't find the black one on the Walmart website and have not heard anyone mention in a post either.

Re: Walmart Hygrometers

I guess the "white' one you are referring to is the Springfied. I'm not familiar with this one:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10671021

I have two Accu-Rite hygrometers. An old one which is off by 5-6% and a newer one (the "black" one you are referring to) which is off by 3%. Based on those two purchases, I am not convinced that cheap is the way to go. A good quality hygrometer which could be calibrated after salt testing will run you about $21. That is going to be my next purchase.

Re: Walmart Hygrometers

Thanks for posting the brand names. I"m writing this post at work and didn't have them in front of me. I'm curious as to where the variance is in these simple little units and how sensitive they might be. I will post again after testing the accu-rite model but it sounds like hit and miss with all of them.

Re: Walmart Hygrometers

Here's my latest test results. I re-tested all three hygrometers ( 1 Accu-Rite ,2 Springfields) in the same test container . I made sure my salt and distilled water ratio was very accurate and tested for 48 hrs. Here are the results:

Springfield #1 74% +1

Springfield #2 76% -1

Accu-Rite 72% +3

So all three are going back into their perspective humidors and will be gauged according to the values above.
Thanks for playing,
Gene

Re: Walmart Hygrometers

That sounds about right. Those Springfields sound pretty good. Did you find them in the same area as the AccuRite?

BTW, the Accurite is available near the air conditioning accesories at Wally World.

I found these in two different Walmarts. One Super walmart and one smaller store. They are in the hardware department in an isle that had outdoor thermometers, storage bins and paint supplies. Not found in outdoor or garden departments like I would have thought.
