Re: Any good Xmas gifts

My wife gave me a 150 count humi. I am in precess of calibrating but I cant seem to get above 65%. Its my first time with this chore and it seems foolproof to put a bottlecap of damp salt in a baggie. Any suggestions? There is no adjustment on the hygrometer. Should I assume its at 75% and move on?

Re: Any good Xmas gifts

Salt test it for at least 36 hours. Is it a digital hygrometer? Or make it easy and order some heartfeltbeads

It could be you need to season the humidor and that can take up to a week.

I got a Xikar Xi2 from my brother... so far I'm not impressed. My CubanCrafters cutter does a much better job.

This one seems to leave a ridge in the cut. Almost like the 2 blade dont meet together properly.

I bought mywlf a Xi3 for the holidays after doing much research (I was between the Xikar and the Palio) and after some peer pressure while at the B&M when I was about to pull the trigger on the Palio. I like it so far (have cut 2 cigars) and I'm getting better at cutting it. You definitely have to learn to use the Xikar properly to remove that ridge. I've found that a fast snip does the job better than a slow one. I've also found that the Xi2's are not as good as the Xi1 or Xi3. They seem lighter in material, not as substantial, and that could be part of the reason you might not like it. The Xi3 (mine has wood edges) is good & heavy so I'm glad I chose it over the carbon fiber Palio which doesn't seem as beefy.

That salt test should do the trick....if you do it properly, it's 75% humidity so you might want to assume your hygro is off and just keep that in mind when you take a reading. If you're using a non-digital hygro, well, they are usually off by a bunch so it wouldn't surprise me.

After using a single digital hygro for some time, mrsreindeer for Christmas picked me up this and I love it (with 3 sensors): http://www.lacrossetechnology.com/9023/index.php so my OCD a$$ can now monitor temp & humidity in 3 different areas of the Vino!

Other standouts this year were:

-finding out on Xmas Eve that mrsreindeer is pregnant after a pretty stressful and drawn out IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) process!!!

-the inlaws got me a Blu-ray DVD-player and an ultra-premium 5-er of some damn fine smokes

-My Dad has started painting and he visited us a couple weeks back and gave us an awesome painting he did; awesome!

What a great holiday, not to mention an amazing Secret Santa bomb!! Holy cow!!! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and wish you a fantastic New Year!

Re: Any good Xmas gifts

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and put a cup filled with distilled water in it for a week or two. That usually does the trick for me. then do the salt and bottle cap check. I´m sure you wont go wrong that way. I usually do this to all my humis at least once every 6-8 months.
