Wine Cooler to Humidro conversion (Please bear with me)

Happy New Year all!

Today I spent a couple hours looking thru hundreds of Wine Cooler-to-Humidor conversion posts here at CS and was unable to find a "Vinotemp for Dummies" post.

I think this might be something for me to seriously consider. I am on my 3rd humi in 5 years and while large it's completely impractical for box storage.

Like many, I use a picnic-style cooler for that but only thru this great forum have I seen that there is a whole community that use the Vinotemp and other wine coolers for stogie storage. There is much to learn.

The coolers are sold here in my city at what I think are very good prices: http://vinocool.com/products.htm

I was wondering if there is a definative post or thread that covers all the basic questions like: what is the best overall cooler to use? How many square feet of storage do the different sized coolers provide? set-up basics, shelving options etc. etc.

I have about 8 boxes and will probably end up with about 16-20 before I pull the reins in. Cannot see myself going much past 400 sticks (Robusto to Churchill in size) Would love to have one decent storage area (for all) and use my humidor for keeping a few faves in... Heck, if the Vino conversion is as good as what I've read I might sell my humidors and simply use a Vino. It seems more practical than trying keep a picnic cooler and a couple smaller humis on the go.

Looking at the siite, the prices seem reasonable, I just need to figure out how to put it all together.

Sorry for a fresh post on a subject that has been well covered but any links to concise threads or post would be a big help. Any sites outside of the forum that are of use? Pics of completed projects would be great too!

I'm sure other newcomers or tradional humidor owners might also benefit from this info.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Have you looked at the sticky post in this section named Vino 101? I believe it has everything you need to get a vino up and running.

Hey Lexxus.... I think the Vinotemp 28 bottle unit is the defacto standard size unit that is most often discussed. Luckily you live close enough to a Canadian supplier to get one at a good price. (Shipping one from there to Ontario seems to be expensive). As mentioned above, the Vino 101 thread does give the information you need to get it going. There are a couple BOTL that produce wooden shelving (one in Ontario) for them as well.

I have moved to a slightly smaller Honeywell unit (18 bottle size) that I purchased at Rona a couple of months ago. It works pretty well but I still have my 2 desktop humidors in service too - nicer presentation. The wine cooler is a good mass-storage device and for boxes of sticks is great.

Thanks Tbor!

Again, I feel like an idiot missing the Vino 101 sticky... Oh well, I'm probably not the only one who missed it.

OK, I am.

My cooler in in my basement and it's about 70 in the summer and about 66 in the winter down there (warmer when I crank the heat and spend time there) My cooler humidity is good but I think the Vino is the way to go.... The glass door is very nice.
