I was feeling cocky!

I'm new to the leaf, I bought my first 75 count humidor last summer. I started out with about 30 cigars and got the humidity nailed at 68 within the first couple of days. I've been able to hold it all the way until December within a percent or two. I got my big humidor about 6 weeks ago. I read about seasoning it here on the site and followed directions. I got the new one up to 65 percent within 2 days. Damn I'm good!

Did I tell you I lived in the NW? December hits and we get nailed with snow and cold weather like I haven't seen in a long, long time. Whats this, my skin is dry, hum, I never need chap stick, oh now the picture starts to unfold.

My boxes have gone totally nuts, my big box is doing better than my small one, but I'm fighting to get it back from 57 to 65 or so. My small box was not wanting to get above 60, so out came a damp, not wet sponge to hit the top. I also broke down and ordered what I should have in the first place, some beads.

Not so cocky now... I be it's a booger in the Mid West and further east to keep them where you want.
My story for the day...

Re: I was feeling cocky!

I had the same experience as you with my wooden tabletop humidor. My % went down into the 50's without realizing it. The weather up here has been ridiculous this winter... however, my Vinotemp hasn't had a single problem! I think you know what to do! I'll be honest though, it never has problems.

The one thing we have plenty of here is humidity. I fight to keep my boxes from being too moist.

Temperature is the main challenge here. It can go from 75(F) during the day to 35(F) at night. Gotta love coastal weather.

We all tend to freek out a bit too much over RH. In the winter months if you can keep it above 55% your lucky. I've stopped worrying about it so much. 50% or higher will work just fine. If you really want to keep them rock solid at 65% get yourself a cooler setup. they are the best.
Stop warring so much and enjoy your cigars, They are tougher than you think.

Even in the east, in the winter time I place a shot glass at times in the humi for extra wet. Adding extra beads will also help out.

Re: I was feeling cocky!

Mine is down around 60% in the winter but Im not really worried cause I have a ton of heartfelt and shilalabeads so I know they'll be fine when I start back up again in the spring

Re: I was feeling cocky!

I live a bit north of you, and I started keeping humidors last winter. When I first started, I thought, "Man, I'm never going to nail this -- I must be doing something wrong!" I just kept having faith in the beads, added a shot glass when I really got paranoid, and then let the cigars be the true barometer of how my boxes were doing.

Re: I was feeling cocky!

Same problem. I'm guessing its the cold. My humi spends all week in the semi with me. It's warm during the day but I don't run the truck over night until the temp drops below 30*. So far so good.

Re: I was feeling cocky!

RH problems and temp problems make me insane. I should just buy the biggest vino there is and quit worrying.
