Beads vs oasis

My ? is two parts.
1] Have end table humi 800 Capacity with a oasis XL Plus electric humidifier. Live in N.Y. In winter have to add water Twice every week. ? If i used 65 RH. beads will that extend the adding watering time if so approximetly how long,
2] ?? Is there any advantage to using the oasis with the beads, or use a recepticle that you offer
Thanks A J

Re: Beads vs oasis

That sounds like way too often to have to fill your oasis. It's possible your humi is poorly sealed.

First, try the new gorilla forum and make an introduction.

Sounds like you have a very poor seal and your humidifier is adding a lot of humidity during the winter. Active humidification can only add humidity, where as beads regulate humidity. Beads work both ways, adding and removing humidity. I have a cabinet about 3 times the size of yours and only use beads in mine and it works fine.

Re: Beads vs oasis

depends on where its leaking... it may be leaking around the glass like my display humi was. In which case I got some silicon ear gel from the drug store and sealed it up.

Re: Beads vs oasis

The masking tape could work well, also try some real thin weather stripping if you can find some. The best I could find was 1/4 in. thick and it is too thick to get my door to close. The drawer might be where you are losing the most humidity, not sure how to better the seal on that though.

Re: Beads vs oasis

I use beads in my cabinet and they work very well. I only have to charge them every 4-6 weeks in the winter.

Just a thought. Is your cabinet near a heat register?

Re: Beads vs oasis

this sounds like almost my exact set-up (i think my humi might be sligthly bigger). i started with oasis and have added beads. i don't even re-charge the oasis anymore but keep it in there for the fan to circulate mositure. i have to re-charge my beads about once per week in the winter. very dry in the house...

Re: Beads vs oasis

I am currently running a Cigar Oasis XL Plus in my cabinet. I do have some hearfelts coming. I am considering putting some of those in as well so that the Cigar Oasis doesn't have to run as often.

Re: Beads vs oasis

Ive been using two Heartfelt 70% tubes in a 175ct box for about 2wks. Ive been adding and removing sticks daily and the box probably gets opened 2-3x/day. Until yesterday it was holding a rock-steady 70, then last night plumeted to 66% so I refilled. I use one on the top left (of two) trays and one in the bottom right. Checking all over the box, RH seems to be consistent. So far to good.

Re: Beads vs oasis

I've been using wet type floral foam since I started to store cigars(almost 4 months now) and never had any problems with it. However, I don't like that often humidity control so I've ordered some Heartfelt beads

Re: Beads vs oasis

I have tried the XL Plus on it's own in a high end cabinet, and it consistently dried out about every three three to four days, and ran almost constantly. I added a pound of Heartfelt beads, and in the winter can go a month or more without recharging the beads. I use both, the Oasis mainly just for air circulation, and the beads provide the humidity.

Re: Beads vs oasis

I did the same, added beads and use the XL for fan. Also, I used canning wax to rub around the edges of my table side humi to help seal better. Worked like a charm
