Question help seasoning a humidor

Newbie question....How do I season a cabinet style humidor?
I bought a Trivoli humidor from Tampa Humidor and a pound of 65%RH beads from Heartfelt. Both arrived today and I am ready to get started seasoning the unit but neither came with any directions for new setup. Please help

Season it like you would any other humidor, just remember it is going to take a much longer period of time.

Re: help seasoning a humidor

Thanks....but I was asking for an explanation of how to season a humidor. The original desktop unit I have came from a friend who gave up smoking cigars and was seasoned when I got it.

Re: help seasoning a humidor

Just wipe the cedar down with a lightly damp towel using distilled water. Put in the beads 50% hydrated.. (some are clear some are not). In a couple days you should be fairly stable.

Re: help seasoning a humidor

You could also leave a small cup or bowl of water there to help the cedar take in the moisture.

Re: help seasoning a humidor

I don't think you should ever wipe down your humidor with distilled water.

-Do salt test to your hygrometer and make sure its calibrated
-Put a few bowls of microwaved distilled water (not boiling, but just get the water hot) in the humidor (along with the hygrometer)
-Wait for 2-3 days and then put the bowls back into the microwave and repeat.
-I would wait at least 10-14 days to make sure your RH level is stabilized.
-When youre ready to put your cigars in you throw the beads in with them.

I know a lot less than most people on this forum but thats just the way I was told. There seem to be a few different ways people season their humidor. IMO you shouldnt wipe down the humi with water..others will disagree.

If there is something wrong with the way I do it hopefully people here will correct it. Good luck with the new humi!

cheers

i also was told not to wipe them even thou some instructions say to. saw it on another site said the same thing. agree always use distilled water also. always afraid of anything wet touching such dry wood leaving a water stain.

This is probably the best advice. Wiping down the wood can lead to cracking or warping the wood.

I agree with this, i know people say not to but i have wipe all 4 of mine with distilled and i have had no issues with it but its at your own risk.

I do all of the above but i like to put the beads in after it is seasoned to pull the humidity to right where i want it before i put the cigars in. And with such a large humidor, the first time you put cigars in the humidity will probably go real low. Dont freak out this is common just give it some time to come back up.

Agree with Richter. I have done mine humidors (one is a cabinet) in a similar way with good results (no need to heat water). IMO you should get to acceptable humidity levels in 3-5 days.
