Still buying the same amount of cigars I always have. However, I have concentratng mainly more on boxes of those sticks I know that are my standbys. More or less girding for the increased taxes of the new administration. Among other things, SCHIP will pass soon. Also, thought I read somewhere of a price increase due soon on Nics because of increased labor costs.

re: has falling economy affected cigar sales?

For me it has actually boosted box buying. No longer are the days of buying individual sticks on the spur of the moment. Those trips cost more (per stick, and fuel). So I have stuck to what I know I like, saving money on boxes at good websites like Cigars International and Cigar Bid. I try to take advantage of shipping and freebie deals to. My general rule is to not order a box unless I get some sort of deal (since there is usually a website out there that has one). Will I quit if it got worse? No, I find that smoking is still a simple luxury, that actually free's stress. It is a mini vacation that I need, without buying plane tickets,a boat, or hotel room.

Ditto....I pretty much buy exclusively from CI and either take advantage of Joe's Deal (w/free shipping) or use that standing coupon for free shipping. Nothing aggravates me more than dropping $5-$7 for shipping.

I've bought more cigars recently (including new humi), but that's mostly because of the $300 I won in my fantasy football league.

re: has falling economy affected cigar sales?

Haven't been able to buy anything since October because the wife is watching the accounts like a hawk. Luckily I have a cooler full of cigars to weather the storm.

One local B&M has gone out of business because he got in trouble with the tax man.

I totally understand. I have actually kept a side amount of money off the "grid". I try to cut back on other habits to continue smoking. It's not that hard in all honesty. I rather smoke than go to the movie theatre or eat at a restaurant. Also I have began selling stuff on ebay. Got rid of a small humidor, and some camping equipment I never use. All that is going towards box orders. My only samples come from freebies and such included.

Re: has falling economy affected cigar sales?

For me, my cigar buying has stopped entirely, as I'm currently unemployed...the joys of the economy.

At least my collection is massive enough to go for quite a while before running dry....I think i have close to 200 cigars.

Probably not yet as folks are stocking up to beat SCHIP. After that, I imagine cigars sales might be hurt. Apparently packages from a lovely central European country will also be scrutinized with much greater vigor.

Re: has falling economy affected cigar sales?

It would appear the economy has affected cigar sales. I copied this from an internet article:

Now the world's largest cigar company, Imperial's report on its cigar section was brief, but to the point:

"Cigar volumes in the USA and Europe continue to be impacted by restrictions on smoking in public places and economic slowdown, particularly in the premium segment.

It makes sense, we read about unemployment and underemployment. And there really are very few places to smoke anymore. Gone are the days you could have a big steak at Del Friscos and then kick back with a port and a cigar after they bus the table. You guys in Denver and points beyond know the restaraunt... Here in Flroida you are relegated to a patio to smoke. I would consume more gars if I could relax and have one after the meal at the restaraunt.

I am loading up now ahead of SCHIP, but I also know there is no reason to keep purchasing at this pace after SCHIP. Post-SCHIP the cigar manufacturers and sellers will likely see a substantial decline in sales.

Re: has falling economy affected cigar sales?

I'll be buying around the same, probably a little less then my average if things work out in my favor, but I'll be limiting my buying to more of the smaller shops, and definitely the local B&M's, and maybe a bid or two at the devil site every few weeks. Aside from the devil site, I just want to put my funds to the guys who're gonna take the worst blows, y'know? I figure, one day, possibly even in my lifetime, it'll be illegal to buy them. I'm hoping to stock up from then- till they drop the ban on them, or 'till I die- whichever comes first. Just got a feeling that it'll only get worse, before it can possibly get better.

But, overall, I think that the economy, and SCHIP are going to slaughter the majority of cigar sales. I got fired from my job not too long back, and I know how it is, even this early in the crisis, to get things up and running again. I'm lucky to have had friends here who sent some things my way(and forced me to convert to a coolerdor :P )
