I need a torch

Any suggestions on a torch to purchase? It seems like every one that I purchase makes it about 6 months and then craps out on me. I've tried cheap ones and more expensive ones and always the same result. I only use the premium fluid so I don't clog up the lines... but it only seems to only help past 1-2 refills and not a long term light. I'm looking for something under $25 (hard to go higher after spending the same on multiple torches) but will go higher if it will be worth it!!! Thanks Jason

The Ronson jet lighter can be bought online for about $8. Others on this site swear by them. I have a Colibri that I have had for 5 years. It still works great, and I do not use the premium butane.

I normally pick up my lighters when cigar sites throw one in free with a sampler or a box. CI and JR are really good about this. The lighters are either Colibri or Xikar. I have a bunch of those lighters also. I finally threw one away and it was 7 years old!

I agree with havanitascigars,,,the Ronson is my go to lighter. I have tired virtually every lighter on the market,,have paid as high as $200 for a friggin lighter only to have it crap out on me. I had two Ronsons gifted to be about 6 months ago and the fire up every time without fail. I went to WalMart yesterday and saw they have 6 of them,,,bought em all up for $2.94 each which I know I will never ever need another lighter again. If you can find em, buy em all,,,they are well worth the price.

I vote Xicar myself if you plan on keeping it for the rest of your life. I have one and my original triple flame had a jet plugged 6 months in. I had a friend meet the Xicar rep and exchanged it with no questions asked.

The Ronson Jet is great. I got mine for $4 at CVS and the only problem with it is that it has a hard time lighting when it is colder than 40* out.

My other lighter is a Xikar Element, which is excellent and runs about $40. It has a dual flame and a built in punch.

Save your pennies, and buy a St. Dupont X-TEND. Best lighter on the market, hands down.

Jason,
Have you tried following these tips from Mark at Cigarmony? http://www.cigarmony.com/index.asp?P...on=Custom&ID=7

Since I began using these tips, I no longer have any problems with my lighters. Hope this helps.

Lighter Fix Tips

In my opinion, 90% of the problems that occur with lighters are because of the quality of the butane that is being used. (The most common symptom is sputtering or not lighting)

The reason is that butane contains impurities that cause clogging in the ignitor of the lighter. These impurities can be filtered out during the refining process. That's why I have chosen to carry Vector butane - it's also the cheapest per volume is the most consistantly available.

The MINIMUM number of refinings you should use is 3x or "Triple Refined" but the Vector is refined 5x and the Lava is 5x refined. These two are by far the cleanest and best fuels that you can use.

The other most common problem with lighters is having air trapped in the fuel chamber. Most lighters come with instructions on how to "purge" the lighter. That's what it's referring to.

These are simple things to do to tell if the lighter can be repaired or not.

Here are a few tips:

1. Bleed the lighter until it's total empty. Make sure the valve is pointing down. (Do not attempt this while the flame is lit). You have to shake the lighter as you bleed the valve. And may have to repeat many times before it's completely empty.

2. Refill with a MIN. of triple refined butane. This may take two or three shots to totally fill it. Wait several minutes for the butane to come up to room temperature. This is fairly important as cold butane will not ignite.

3. Turn your flame level to the (-) sign on your lighter prior to lighting. I have noticed that after refilling the adjustment is out of whack. So after every refill turn it down and gradually adjust it to the desired level. Many times this is why a lighter doesn't work properly after a refill as well. (Also, generally as your lighter gets low on butane you have to adjust the level higher)

4. Make sure you have a spark. If you have a soft flame (ie flint) the obvious solution would be to replace the flint. If you have a torch lighter, you should see the spark coming from a small wire inside the lighter. If there is not spark, there may be lint from your pocket. Use some compressed air in short spurts to clear it out (try to avoid blowing in it if possible, you usually get small amount of spit on the ignitor which will also prevent a spark).

5. If you are using a flint (soft flame) style lighter and still don't have a flame make sure your burners are clean. Sometimes they get built up with tar from cigars and burning gas residue. You can use a TINY amount of distilled water on a q-tip or a small wire brush to clean them. Be VERY gentle and make sure it's dry before trying to ignite.

If all else fails, use a match! Just make sure you let it burn for a couple of seconds before lighting your cigar with it as the sulfur from the match impart a funky taste into your cigar.

I hope this helps and please have a safe and happy smoking my friends.

I also have the Ronson Jet-Lite ($2.94 at Super Wal-Mart). Things a little tank. Now if you want to go a bit fancier and get a GOOD warranty to boot, go with a Xikar lighter. I've got the Executive torch and I love it. Best of all, the wartranty is Lifetime. Nay time it craps out just send it back and they'll fix it or give you a new one. an't beat that. They also have a program where when you register it on line they'll send you case for it.

I anted up for a Lotus single torch...they don't have the lifetime guarantee's that Xicar and Colibri (I think)....but it has lasted me some odd 18 months with never having had a problem except running out of fluid.

So, with that being said, if you are on a budget, I would buy a few of the Ronson's....all torches light the same, they just feel different in your hand, and some are prettier than others.
