Calibrating a built in Hygro?

I purchased a humidor (not the greatest on the market, but I got cigars rolling around everywhere). Regardless it has a built in hygro and I dont know if its that accurate. I would do a normal salt test, but I cant remove the hygro (I dont even want to try as it keeps the seal) so does anyone have a way to calibrate it?

I have never had one that was accurate, and the one I have on my glasstop doesn't work at all.

Best bet is to invest in a digital! IMO.

If your box is seasoned, take a hygrometer from an other box that you know works. Put it in your new box let it sit for a few hours and see what it reads compared to the unit on your new box. That at least will give you an idea until you can pick up a digital.
Good luck...

Re: Calibrating a built in Hygro?

I am pretty new to the cigar world but I too just got a new humidor. Like everyone says, getting a digital hygrometer is a smart choice as I have noticed that with my new humidor's analog hygrometer is questionable. Tapping on it a bit will cause swings of 4-6% so while calibrating it I would tap on it and when it finally settled at a constant number for 24 hours I adjusted it and re-installed it in the humidor. But tapping on it still causes swings, so I picked up a digital one and am calibrating it.

As far as calibrating yours, all of the hygrometers I have seen are removeable. if yours is one that is that is installed through the lid or front of your humidor it probably just pressed in there. The hygrometer usually has a soft plastic/rubber gasket around it to help it seal. This is how mine was. I popped the hygrometer out and placed a peice of tape over the hole so I could be seasoning the humidor while I was calibrating the hygrometer...hope this helps!

This happens all to often. I bought a large overflow box and when I got it the analog hygro was missing parts and made it unadjustable.

They sent me a new hygro and it was great for a week, until it stopped working completely. Definately get a digital one.

The built in hydro can be just pushed out from the back. it just has a rubber seal that holds it in. the problem with mine when i was calibrating it was that there was no way to adjust it. i agree with the others when they say you should go digital

Without a doubt grab a digital to much of an investment to waste those beauties
