Cooler Reccomendation (approx 50 Qt)

As Im sure you can tell from the subject, I am trying to make a coolerdor.

I've been looking at various coolers and have come across 2 distinct problems. Either they have a bad seal, or they have a foul plastic odor inside (or both). Anyone out there using a cooler (approx 50 qts) that seals well and doesn't stink? Thanks

Have you looked at Colemans 54 and 70 qt coolers? From what I've seen, Coleman seems to have a better seal than Igloo.

You can wash away the plastic smell. Put some damp cedar wood strips or cigar boxes inside the cooler. Leave it overnight. That might work.

I second the Coleman. Good seal, no plastic smell, now just stinky tobacco.

I Just bought a Coleman 54 quart "Extreme" Marine cooler (comes with removable rope handles) and it's great. Super seal and no plastic smell.

FWIW, the plastic smell is no big deal, just fill cooler with water/bleach solution, and let sit over night. Empty it out and let it dry in the sun the next day. Smell all gone.

I like the Igloo MaxCold coolers. The humidity stays very steady, and the recessed lid makes for easier box stacking.

Bleach!?!? Is that a good idea?

I use the Coleman coolers (48qt) and have been very pleased. $15 at Kmart and holds humidity so well that I can take out the humidity element and it will stay rock steady for a month.

I wash them out with Dawn dishwashing liquid and baking soda and they have no residual smell.

Re: Cooler Reccomendation (approx 50 Qt)

I've been using an Iglou 120 qt for awhile and humidity has been rock stead.

I have 1lb of 65% beads and an oust fan in there to keep things stirred up. Keeping it at least half full will help regulate RH too.

My process for preping a coolerdor (I'm sure I stole it from someone, but don't know who to give credit to)

1. Wipe out with diluted bleach
2. Let dry overnight with lid open.
3. Place baking soda on plate, set in cooler, and close for a couple of days.
4. Add fan, humidifaction devices and hygrometer.
5. Once stabalized, add three or four boxes each day.

Good luck,

Dan
