Idea for a coolerdor?
Ive been tossin around the idea of building a coolerdor for awhile now and have been concerned with the temperature of the basement where it will most likely be stored. Its usually about 60 to 65 in the area Id like to keep it. Most would say thats fine but Id like to keep it up around 70 degrees. Ive heard of guys installing light bulbs to raise the temp inside the humi and then the other day a lightbulb of my own came on. Why not a completely temperature controlled humi? Im talkin heat and AC. Thermoelectric air conditioning or Peltier cooling is what im talkin about. Very small and efficient. You can buy a brand new travel cooler that heats and cools for about $60. Rip that baby apart to steal the guts and morph it onto a 150 quart Igloo and never have to worry about being to cold or too hot again. Most likely have to get a decent control/tstat to make everything work. There are also companies that make great little thermoelectric cabinet coolers for electronic installations but they are around $200. Anybody have thoughts? Am I dreamin? Wastin my time?

Re: Idea for a coolerdor?
Sounds like you might be on to something there. I never thought about that but I'm sure it could be made to work....I've got an old non working mini fridge that I use. Haven't had any temp problems yet,I keep it in the bedroom, but that might be a great option for me as well...Keep us posted if you decided to try it out...Maybe you should patent it....LOL....

Re: Idea for a coolerdor?
I know around my house in the winter its usually about 73 to 75 in the house upstairs. Way to hot for me and probably too hot for my cigars. I do HVAC/refrigeration work for a living so ive kinda got a foot in the door with this thing its just figuring out the correct size and what to use for a tstat so it will automatically switch between heat and cool depending on need. I guess its not a question of if I need it or not.....I just wanna build it! Its got a few obsticals to get around....like getting rid of the condensate (and making sure it doesnt get on the cigars). Figuring out the overshooting of temps might be tricky to because the heatsink will stay cold/hot for some time after the thermostat is satisfied and opens. Definetly still in the drawing board stage.

While you're onto something, I'm not sure why you;d want to put any work or $$ into storing your sticks above 65*F; that's a perfect temp!

Re: Idea for a coolerdor?
+1 , I've heard for long term ageing some prefer 70 but I prefer to keep mine around 65.

Re: Idea for a coolerdor?
Ready Heaters have an inline thermostat that you can be purchased separately. This is what I use to keep caulking warm in my jobsite trailer.
