Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
I am new to this forum and i had this question. I bought this 75 capacity humidor from CI and it is a nice mahogany one with glass on all four sides, with a door that opens up. Not a typical box type...
Anyway, i have a digital hygrometer in there as well that has been calibrated using the salt test. For some reason, the Temp will not drop below 74 but it can be as high as 76.. the RH is between 65 and 72, which is perfect though! How do i get the temp to come down? BTW, the temp in the room that it is in is around 70, usually not hotter than 72. Any suggestions? Is it OK to keep the temp at this level?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
Ive heard arguments going both ways concerning temp and rh...are you sure the thermo is reading right? I have a radio shack rh/temp digital that shows max and min temp and rh.. my temp in my bedroom will sometimes get to 78 and fridgedor will show a max temp of 75 or so...my rh will vary between 65 and 73...I've had no problems with any of my sticks so far...I would say as long as the rh stays between the levels you say it should be ok...

Re: Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
Either your room thermostat or your hygrometer is off - naturally the humidor will equilibrate to the room temperature. If the room is at 70-72 you are fine, hotter than that and you are providing good conditions for mold growth. My humi's are in the lowest level of the house that stays at about 70 degrees for just that reason.

Well, i have just the thermostat where i set the temp to, and i keep it at 70, so i guess there is a possibility that the temp may be higher than 70 in this room. I mean so far, thank god, no beetles in my sticks, but i am afraid that may happen with high temp and also i dont want my cigars to be too moist. Anyway, if the temp in the room does infact turn out to be 70, i wonder how i would get the temp down in the humi? This is really weird to me.. |

Re: Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
It doesn't make sense that the temp in the humi would be much greater then the room temp. I would certainly double check it with a temp gauge...Also make sure it's not sitting on or near something that generates heat, like tv or something...or sitting in direct sun...I don't know if cigars generate heat or not, I'm a newb so I can only answer what I know so far. One thing I've heard of people doing is adding one of those small ice packs to their humi to keep the temp down, of course make certain that it doesn't touch the sticks....

Re: Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
If the room temp is 70, the humidor temp will be 70 - regardless of what the different temperature measuring devices say.

Thanks to all for the advice. Ill just ignore the temp reading on the hygrometer and stick to the RH on it, being that is accurate.

Re: Temp too high in my Humi... RH is good though...
What type of thermostat do you have in your house?
You may have a thermostat that has a "heat anticipator" which means there should always be a 2 degree difference. So if you set the thermostat for 72, it will shut off at 70. Regardless, your Hygrometer should be matching, or damn close to the temperature in the room. Make sure your Humidor is not near a vent/ radiator. I would start with the Hygrometer first.
