ANOTHER bead question

What's up fellas,

I have BOTH beads and a humidifier (green foam kind) in my humidor. Now, I know you aren't supposed to use 50/50 on the beads because it will ruin them. My question is, can I use 50/50 for my HUMIDIFIER without ruining my beads? I'm not sure if my beads would absorb the PG from the air....

I am currently using nothing but distilled water, and would like to have some 50/50 for preventative mold purposes.

Thanks,
C_

Re: ANOTHER bead question

Here's an easier way to alleviate that problem, if this is an active device, like a hydra, cut the foam out and replace it with beads. If it's just a puck style, see if you can get beads into it without them spilling out, maybe use a nylon. In an active resevoir type device you'll notice you'll be able to put more water in the reseviour with beads than with foam. Bonus.

Problem solved.

Thanks for the reply. I have actually considered placing beads in the humidifier. Unfortunately, I have sealed the device with silicone to stop it from leaking through. I don't want to break my seal that I worked so hard for!

Additionally, I don't have a problem with RH holding. I am quite pleased with my current setup......EXCEPT for not having anything to fight mold. Hence why I am interested in using 50/50 solution instead of distilled water.

Good post, and please keep them coming. I have the 50/50 sitting on my shelf, just waiting for everyone to give me the go ahead before I proceed.

Re: ANOTHER bead question

I've used beads (65%) exclusively with distilled water and have never had a problem with mold. Unless your beads are too wet (100%) over long periods, you should not have a problem.

Let the beads w/ distilled water do the work in controlling the humidity and forget the PG, IMO!

Re: ANOTHER bead question

Does anyone know if beads will/will not absorb PG in a humidor's atmosphere?

I don't believe they will. Here's something that the owner of Heartfelt Inc. stated, from another thread:

With that said I would not risk it since there is no reason to have the 50/50 in the humidor anymore. The beads will control the rh better than the 50/50 ever did.

David
Hope this helps.
