Coolerdor with glass lid...

I'm considering making a coolerdor for all my boxes. My humidor is quickly filling and I'm running out of room. Seems to be a common problem with many of us. You guys were right, the slope is darn slippery! lol.

Anyhow, I have some spare glass kicking around and I got to thinking. I could modify the lid on the cooler and install glass allowing me to see inside. Of course I would need to ensure that the glass is sealed properly. I don't see a problem in doing this.

Just wondering if anyone has considered or has done this?

Re: Coolerdor with glass lid...

Sounds overly difficult to me, but I'm a lazy American.

If you think you can pull it off without ruining a cooler, then go for it. It'd be kind of neat.

I am trying to find a cooler that has the slots on the side so shelves could be added. I recall someone posting that they had found a (I believe Igloo) cooler at Walmart but I have no luck. I have tried Walmart and Canadian Tire but they only have Coleman products in stock. Anyone have any ideas?

That's an awesome idea, it kind of reminds me of the glass top coffee table/humidors. http://www.humidorcentral.com/images/c_table_lg.jpg

Re: Coolerdor with glass lid...

It could be done for sure, the only thing you have to take into account is that most coolers have double waled lids/bodies (ie, the lid is thick and hollow inside). You could cut the hole through both layers, but then you'd either have to do glass on both sides which would be heavy, or have one side (probably the inner layer) just open, cut plastic. If you cut it back further from the outer glass opening, it would probably not be too noticable.

Heidi-ho Sir,

I picked up a 100 qt. coleman with the "divider slots" as they call them at "The Sports Authority" the other day. Coleman makes this size in an "average" seal and a 5 day seal. both with dividers. I chose the 5 day seal which is tight enough to be a bit of a pain to get open, but I figure I can get it to ease up some by modifying the main friction contact point while retaining the quality of the seal.

I wanted an igloo but couldn't find one either.

No point calling Coleman to ask which models have the dividers. I tried and they are useless. Ya gotta go and check em out in person.

To consider; I suspect that the weight of the glass "door" will be such that the coolidor will always fall over unless you attach it to something.

Also these coolers have cup recesses in the lid which reduces the "R" value. So replacing it makes some sense. Although single pane glass "R" value is not very high... I am going to fill in the cup recesses on mine cause the "R" value matters to me.

Anywho good humi-ing to you.

Re: Coolerdor with glass lid...

Thanks for the info Fiddlegrin.

The way I see it I have 2 options.

1) Modify the existing lid to fit the glass
2) Remove the lid and design my own glass lid.

I'm leaning towards modifying but can't make that decision till I purchase a cooler. I'm not sure why I take on dumb projects like these but I can't help myself. I am sure that this will end up costing me more than it is worth but oh well.

There is no doubt that the glass lid will be heavy and securing the cooler to a base is probably a must.

Anyhow, any tips from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Coolerdor with glass lid...

I am assuming you are asking about "R" value that Fiddlegrin talks about. If so here is the definition.

"The R value or R-value is a measure of thermal resistance (K·m²/W) used in the building and construction industry. The bigger the number, the better the building insulation's effectiveness . R value is the reciprocal of U-value and one "R" is equal to ten tog."

Just out of curiosity Fiddlegrin. Why are you concerned about the R value?

Do you have an Army and Navy in Winterpeg? If not then you might have to scour second hand shops or garage sales!
