Wine cooler help... Non-thermoelectric

Can I still use one even it is a non thermo electeric? Go a Haier from a friend but will it be harmful to the cigars? Thanks in advance.

Re: Wine cooler help... Non-thermoelectric

If it isn't thermoelectric, the cooling system will be compression. What that means is that it will suck the humidity right out of the cooler. I think you know what the answer is in that case :/

That pretty well covers it.

Yup. But that doesn't mean you can't use it as a humi. Just don't plug it in.

True. I forgot where I saw one member using an old mini fridge as a humidor.

I have a Vinotemp and just use kitty litter crystals...no need to plug it in.

Pardon my ignorance, but supposing beads are being used, wont that counter the effects of the air being too dry?

No, it will suck all the moisture being released by the beads as well. The beads will always be releasing their moisture, as opposed to release and absorb, and you will never be able to build up the RH to a consistant level.

Re: Wine cooler help... Non-thermoelectric

If you live in a place with fairly consistent temperature (or more importantly the temp in your house is consistent), then no need to run the cooler. In which case there's really no diff between your Haier and a Vinotemp.

Re: Wine cooler help... Non-thermoelectric

Thanks for the advice, i know have a 12 bottle wine cooler thats thermoelectric, wish i could get a bigger unit but unfortunately where im from, its a challenge to purchase thermoelectric ones as its mainly the conventional compressor types that are selling on the shelves.

so i guess... i will stick with my cooler for now, although its a massive upgrade from a 200 ct humidor.

Re: Wine cooler help... Non-thermoelectric

I have a 48 bottle Hairer that is compressor and I don't have any problem with my cigars. The unit drops to 59% humidity when it is running which is maybe 5 minutes an hour and once it stops it quickly corrects itself.
You will have a bigger fluctuation when you open the door to ponder what you want to smoke.

I also have a Staebell ARISTOCRAT M Plus and with both of them I remove the cigars I'm going to smoke and put in a non-cooled humidor(dry box) for a day or two before I smoke them.
