Is it worth it?

Intro: I am new to cigars but since the first time i have fallen hard and fast for the solem relaxation from a decent smoke. I work for a local ems agency doing 24hr shifts, the soothing relaxation of a good cigar on the back pad of the station at 1am as things slow down has bolstered my affinity of cigars.

Im not sure the condescension that the jr name carriers, though im sure at its omission in various places there is some, but anyway:

I was at my local JRs and being new to the allure of peaceful relaxation that a decent some holds i blissfully and perhaps blindly inquired as to a good humidor for a mere amatuer. I was suggested the following:
JRCigars.com: Accessories: WALNUT DESKTOP WALNUT 50-CIGAR DESKTOP HUMIDOR
(if the links is blocked, it is item no. 3HDT)

It seems of decent construction, but i see no mention of the make up of its interior and from the construction of the lid it seems to be a solid peice of wood with no sort of lining, lending the thought that it may not have anysort of cedar lining. It is currently seasoning, but now i cant help but wonder.

Does anyone have any additional knowledge on this item?
What are the cons of a humidor without a cedar inner?

Thank your for your time.

Plus you cant deny that the jr version of the monte cristo no.2 and the la gloria cubana wavell are decent smokes for the money.

Re: Is it worth it?

It seems nice. I would not reccommend something without cedar.

I would say you may want to try and find a 100 count. This habit seems to hammer people sometimes and you will get great deals on cigars and come to find out you have no room to store them.

Check out cigarbid.com You can get some steal on bigger humis there.

That is sweet you live by jrcigars. wont have to pay for shipping.

What would be the precise implications of not having it? In other words what exactly does it affect? Moisture? Taste? Maturity? Classiness?

Re: Is it worth it?

Welcome Will,

This might have a cedar veneer and the walnut is on the outside. There is some back and forth as to whether it is necessary at all but it is definitely tradition. The main thing to worry about is whether it has a good seal. This is sometimes a crap shoot with cheaper humidors. If you are looking for something cheap, go with a cooler and put a nice cedar cigar box in it to help regulate the humidity when you open and shut it.

Re: Is it worth it?

Cedar helps act as a humidity buffer. I will help retain some moisture and release it as the humidity drops inside the humidor. It will help regulate it for you and buy you some time when your humidification goes dry. IMO it also can help the taste of cigars over time. The more recent development of humidity beads that absorb and release humidity to keep the environment steady has helped many people out. I personally will not buy a humidor that does not contain cedar.

The advice on the size is very good. You really are better off getting a 100 ct desktop humidor. There is more space and it is easier to care for. There are excellent deals on cigarbid for desktop humidors that are hard to beat.

most likely it has a cedar veneer inside but,,,,

Don't buy a cheap humidor, it will be a waste of money. If you want to go economical, nothing does better than tupperware or a cooler. Always buy way bigger than you think you need. Be advised advertised capacity must be measured in cigarillos. They will hold 50-60% of advertised capacity. Cedar originally was intended to deter insects, but it also imparts a nice taste to cigars, and it is a humidity buffer.

Re: Is it worth it?

A lot of people on here have had success with cheaphumidors.com and tampahumidor.com. Typically far cheaper than what you'd get in store.

Re: Is it worth it?

Check out Pro Humidors. I am very, very happy with the one I purchased from them. Jeremy is a true gentleman and will happily answer all the questions you have. Could I have purchased a humidor for less? Yes. Would I? No. Jeremy will also be the source for my next one. He also stands by his product without question or hassle.

Re: Is it worth it?

Cedar isn't a must, it's a relatively recent thing, but it has certain advantages. First, woods have natural resistence to both molds and bacteria. They aren'y perfect, but better than glass, metal, or certainly plastics. Secondly, cedar is a soft, porous and extremely elastic wood. It holds tremendous amounts of moisture, so acts as its own humidification medium. It sort of hedges your bets in terms of over, or under humidifying the environment. The pores hold moisture without swelling better than most other woods. Finally, most find that the aroma of cedar tends to impart a pleasant, additive element to most cigars, without being overpowering, at least in the case of Spanish cedar. Stay away from American cedar as it's aroma is far too strong.

Like Phantom said, don't buy a "cheap" humidor. Take your time and look around. My most recent purchase was of a MSRP $540 box, for $125. Deals are out there. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a "coolerdor" with some cedar inserts. Personally I would not want cigars sitting on plastic, but a few cigar boxes, trays, or even some cedar boards inside will do wonders.

Good luck

I think jledou hit on the most important issue.

If you already have it, it seals good, and holds humidity well, then it will work fine. Even with good deals, it is real easy to get upside down in this hobby. I present my credit card statement as proof.

Re: Is it worth it?

That humi looks as if it is made from Spanish Cedar and has a Walnut veneer finish on it. If it's from JR I'm sure it will be a decent humi. If it seals and holds humidity then all you need to do is fill er up!

Any brands of humidors that you would recommend?
