Angry Vinotemp ceadar shelves/cooling unit .help

Hello , got a question for the vinotemp carpenters/technicians out there .

I made my self some custom cedar shelves for my 12 bottle vinotemp. The shelves smell of cedar heavily. ... my question is should I stain the shevles with anything(mineral oil?) , as i put in a test cigar, gave it a wiff after a few hours on the tray and the cigar smells like....cedar...not a cigar ..and yes it is spainsh cedar(hunduran mohonagy) not aromatic or anything else, its spanish cedar. how should i lessen the cedar smell...or should i worry about this. To make the shevles I got some unmilled spanish cedar, milled the wood and the made trays, sanded, finish sanded, the wipped each shelve with distilled water and put the shevles in the vinotemp... I put a pound of beads in th vinotemp and the humidity is great pretty much 70 the whole way though

the cooling unit is being crazy, as I run it for a few hours the temp reaches the set point, the temp stays steady for a few hours then after a few hours more starts to climb for no reason.... you can here the relay on the cooling unit switch on and off while the temp is getting stable and switch on and off while the temp is stable (the fan never stops)..when the unit starts to heat no switching is heard and the green light is on all the time(while when stable the light is red).. somethings wrong there. the temp climbs to a little less than the temp of the room about 20-21 degrees C and stays. I dusted the thing out ....no change
any help would be great

The good cedar smell, you want that. It will lessen on it's own over time. As far as the peltier unit, without knowing your skill level at troubleshooting a live circuit or if you have a mutimeter to do this, I don't recommend putting your fingers in there. Take it to a tech.

Re: Vinotemp ceadar shelves/cooling unit .help

got a meter and what not, took the peliter out, put it on my power supply, no current going to the thing, thus not temperature differentials , measured resistance should be 2.4 ohms, its close to infinite , so somehow it died , i just don't know how. the things are rated to work for 200 000 hours

Sounds like a short. Since it was working, more or less and now it's not, look at where a short could occur. Wiring, terminations etc. Use a chopstick or wooden pencil and gently push on the terminations while watching your meter. You may be able to find it and correct it. Good luck.

Re: Vinotemp ceadar shelves/cooling unit .help

I missed where you said the ohmmeter was reading infinity. It's not a short, something's open. Look for a broken wire, solder termination that's loose ( that would explain the intermittant working ) a broken lead on a cap, etc.

Will you post some pics of your shelves? I just got a Vino 12 and picked up some Spanish Cedar today - but I can't decide how I want to do them.

Thumbs up Re: Vinotemp ceadar shelves/cooling unit .help

Sorry no pics, the digi-cam is out ...

I made the base of the shelve the width of the vinotemp(including the slots) to allow it to be inserted into the vinotemp through the slots, i think around 11.5 inches, the I made the long sides the depth of the vinotemp around 8 inches and the made the sort sides about 2.5 inchs high, I think you have 3 inchs of space in between each slot for shevling the 2.5 inch height allows for some space in between each shelve. Measured in about a quater of an inch from the base so the base would have sliding wings then glues the 4 sides together then glued and clamped the assembly to the base. I was thinking about making some holes in the base of the shelves to allow for air flow, pretty simple , you dont need alot of cedar so you can rip the wood down to three 1/4 inch slabs, this will triple your stock, providing you got 1" thick cedar ...I can have pics up next week when the digi cam returns, pretty much I made 4 boxes that fit inside the vino with a little over hang on the base to allow the box to slide in and out, and tired to make the cedar go as long as it could , because it was 37 bucks for 3 board feet!!! I can fit about 30-35 torpedo size cigars into each shelve, I could mabey get about 150-200 cigars in the shevles also I left one of the slots of the vinotemp open with no shevle just a cedar plank to store a couple of boxes on. .. and one slot open at the bottom for my beads.mabey this helps?
