Accidentally used PG on new Humidor cedar linng
Well I wasn't completely sure what I was doing with my new humidor as I am new to the hobby. I was suggested by my local smoke shop to wipe down the cedar lining with some Xikar PG solution. I did this and later that night read that this is bad and that even distilled water should not be used. My Humidor has been seasoning with Boveda 84% Seasoning packs for about a week and has been stable at 71-74% but Im worried that the PG solution may have some weird affect on the cedar wood. It doesnt appear to be warped but will it cause the wood to not absorb the moisture as well, or give off a bad odor or chemical or anything odd like that?
What are your thoughts? Thanks. |

Re: Accidentally used PG on new Humidor cedar linng
it seems you have been given 2 wrong advices in regarding the seasoning of your humidor. One is that PG should be used and the second is not to use distilled water. It should not to PG and yes to distilled water. Maybe sometime you could return to the local shop and point out to them their wrong advice in hope that they do not give that same advice to the next person.
If I was faced with your predicament, I would wipe down my humi with distilled water , almost to the point of saturating the wood and then leave the humi lid open for a few days hoping that the Pg mixes with the distilled water and then evaporates into the air. Then when the humi is dry , just for good measure i would repeat it again. |

Re: Accidentally used PG on new Humidor cedar linng
I would not recommend wiping the wood in your humidor with PG or DW. The reason being is the wood may warp. Many have wiped down with no problem but I have also read where people wiped down and their humidor was rendered almost useless. I would just open it up and let it air out completely and then reseason with either a shotglass of DW, Boveda packs, etc.

I've also read the myriad recommendations for wiping down with DW from a new sponge, etc. The last thing you want to do is introduce too much water too quickly. Depending on the age, dryness and thickness of the cedar you could definitely warp it and ruin your seal forever. Even with the perfect conditions, I see no compelling reason for wiping down a humi other than to give it a light dusting. The risks of this "hurry-up" method far outweigh the benefits. Everyone shoulld be aware that ANY amount of moisture introduced into wood is going to make it move. The trick is to do it slowly. To test this, take a thin cedar box insert and wipe down one side of it with a wet sponge. The thing will stand up off the table in no time. Once the residue from the PG is in the wood, no amount of drying or wiping is going to remove it. Put a blank sheet of paper in it with a shot glass sitting on the paper for a couple days and see if you get any PG leaching into it. (you'll be able to tell if its water or PG) If you do, I'd be carting that box back to the guy who told you to put PG in it in the first place. If not, then you probably didnt get too much in there and it's likely ok to throw your sticks in.

Re: Accidentally used PG on new Humidor cedar linng
The 'wipe down' method helped to destroy my first humidor. Like you I was just learning and someone recommended that it be wiped down. This caused the wood to warp only slightly at first but after about a year or so it simply would not hold any RH.

I have never "wiped" down a humidor.
I set a small bowl of DW in it for a few days, then load her up. |

Re: Accidentally used PG on new Humidor cedar linng
Minotaur, I am sure you are confused as hell for the past few days. There are tons of advice out there and as a noob, you really will be more confused than guided. I have had this desktop that I am still using that was made by MJM Humidors in the state of Washington. Since I acquired it in 1996, I have wiped it down to season it, and every year there after. It hasn't warped or loss the ability to retain humidity. It really is . at some point a trial and error. If your humi warps, is it the wiping down or the quality of the humi? So now, you are going through this trial and error phase. But just remember, cigar smoking is not a science where we consume our day and thoughts in temperature and relative humidity and trying to achieve the magic number of 70/70. There is no magic number! but its about enjoying the pleasure of the smoke. So sit back and light one up and enjoy.
