Which is the best? Butane, Lighter fluid, Wood or Paper matches? Is it all just BS? Or is it pretty important? I know some of you smoke very expensive cigars, the proper lighting of that smoke must come into play. I am so new at this that today I realized, I could probably light these cigars an easier way. how the do you light your cigars? If you know of a great lighting device, post it. Thanks, rns

you should never use paper matches. I like lighters but when I can, i use wooden cigar matches.

at home i primarily use 4" sulfer free matches- there's something about a cool flame that starts the cigar off right. another advantage is, for some reason, i don't have to wear my reading glasses to light my cigar with a match- with a lighter i do. otherwise, i use a butane lighter of which i have several... there's 4 sitting on my desk right now.

I agree with RetroSpek. Avoid paper matches. The wax that's usually on them definitely affects the flavor of the cigar. For a while there, I thought I had a bad batch of Robusto Largas. What really happened is I ran out of wooden matches and was making do with paper. Never again.
If you use a wooden match, just be sure to give it a sec to burn off the igniter material (or get sulphur free matches as mentioned by robmcd). Any butane lighter will do, really. Some of them may get a little hot to hold while you're waiting for the cigar to toast up and take a flame. Avoid lighter-fluid for the same reason as the paper matches. The fumes ruin the cigar. |

I tried several $100 bills today and none of them worked! After much frustration lit it with the an ENRON stock certificate and the damn thing almost went up in flames! Thanks, I learned a lot, half of all the cigars I've lit this past year were correct, the other half? Not good! no more! relaxnsmoke
