Humi temp lowering idea
Here in south MS its HOTT... my house gets fairly warm during the day when we aren't here due to a programmable thermostat (it helps with the power bill). I have a hygrometer that shows temp and RH and to me its too high a temp probly mid to high 70s and possibly low 80s. I have moved the humi out of the direct sun into a dark closet, which is such a shame for such nice looking humi's. Maybe that will help some.
My question is what if I was to pour Distilled water into a icetray and make my own distilled ice cubes, then placed them into a container so they wouldn't spill out when melted down. Do you think this would help? Any pros/cons? I know I would have to replace the cubes daily but its worth a shot. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
Some people use the ice packs you can buy and wrap them in a towel. If you do this just make sure there is no way any condensation can get to your cigars. The biggest problem I see with the ice cubes is it would probably raise your humidity up too high.

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
I did a experiment with a cleaned out tuna can and 3-4 cubes. It lowered the temp about 7-10degrees (good) BUT lowered the RH from 71% down to 56%(bad). I immediatly took it out and the RH started back to rise. Maybe the melting ice drew out the humidity during the melting process? Maybe there is a happy medium with less cubes. I will have to try a few experiments in my next few days off. I have a small icepak I may try too; its sealed and may not draw any humidity out.

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
The works best for a cooler but it will work for a desktop as well. Place your humi' directly on (floor vents) or in the direct airflow (wall or ceiling vents) of an a/c vent. If this is in a "direct sunlight" area, cover it with a doubled over sheet. Might even try putting the desktop in a cooler, it will help buffer the temp swings.

Would one of those "Oust fans" keep it any cooler or just move the air?

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
Just put a fan on it. You'll be suprised how much difference it will make. Even a small clamp on fan would help.

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
Alll good ideas here guys. Try using the bigger silica gel paks to get your humidity down when it starts to go up,,,same here in Atlanta and I have been using the siilica gel to control that aspect.

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
Check every few days though. Don't let 'em get too dehumidified.

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
The humidity stays around low 70% so im pretty good on that. Its just the temp goes up to high 70s or low 80s at times is what gets me a little worried. Should I be though??

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
!!! Is that from beatles?
I'd be a bit worried about using ice or similar to cool my cigars. I don't think drastic shifts in temp are ideal. Maybe if your cigars are in a small room, try cooling that room somehow to ease the effect on the cigars. |

Re: Humi temp lowering idea
Yes it is. I know that it is an extreme example but it does show what the little things are capable of doing.
