Freezidor?

Hey guys I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't seem to find it.
I have an old deep freeze in the garage that is no longer working. I would love to make a humidor out of it. I see all the post about doing it with coolers but can't find any about freezers.(I may not be using the right search words) If I follow the same guide lines as using a cooler is there any reason that I can't do it.
Also, if it is possible and has been done I would love some pics and some advice. Thanks in advance

I’m no expert but I assume it would work great. You will need a bunch of cedar to help regulate the humidity and also a LOT of media (whatever type you like) the give off/absorb moisture.
I like the idea of using something that large, the problem I would have is explaining to the wife why the bank account was in half.

Re: Freezidor?

I found a picture of one from a previous post the has a nice setup using wire racks:

I searched "refridgerators, fridgeadors, cabinets, projects, etc." and found that alot of people are using these...and they work!

Good luck with the project!

Re: Freezidor?

Thanks for the responses guys. The last one looks real awesome, but it would take me a while to fill it up that much. Even with that said I would love to give it a try. Now I will have to set out to find some spanish cedar. Wish me luck on the project.

Re: Freezidor?

I used to use one, it's really pretty easy to set up.

Just clean it out real good with a wet sponge, some antibacterial shit and if you're really worried some bleach. Then get some humidification in there and see how well it holds for a couple days, it should be air tight if it's a good one.

It's really not that hard, basically the same as setting up a coolerdor. You can line it w/ spanish cedar but imo thats really not necessary, all it really does in a cooler/fridge/freezer dor is add that cedary aroma

Re: Freezidor?

I started on the dirty work today. The freezer had been shut up for a while so I propped the door open so it could air out. If things work like I plan I'm gonna start the cleaning process tomorrow. I plan on wiping it out with a little bleach solution, then try the baking soda trick.

If I can get the smell out in the next few days I'm going to get some of the kitty litter beads and make sure it will hold humidity. After that comes the fun. Filling up the thing. I don't really have a collection right now but I'm guessing it wont take long.

I'm still open to any hints, suggestions, or advice to help along the way. I will keep this updated.

Re: Freezidor?

circulating fan maybe a few scentless Febreze or oust fans(battery powered) but plug in computer fans a re great.
fill up empty space with empty cigar boxes.
Seal up open areas, with a non smelly non toxic caulking ,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe, not shure.if that's totally wort it.
I use mine in basement , so i use lowest area because its COOLEST. I keep cheaper cigars in Glass Mason (large 4 qt ) jars. flip top not screw top.

I started by putting my humidors in the turned off fridge in the basement. For temperature reasons in the summer & winter.

Re: Freezidor?

Thanks for the advise. Can I do the flashlight trick to make sure that it has a good seal? Also if I decide to attach some spanish cedar what should I use?

I concentrated on putting entire humidors in Turned off fridge.
to Attempt to Cedar a fridge or freezer is too large for the sticks to attempt to properly Humidify IMO.
Temp is KEY 70 f or UNDER!!
humidification #2
Mold Hates Cooler temps remember this.glue or especially Silicone will give a god awful stink That never airs out Dont try that

Oh Stainless steel Small drywall type screws to attach cedar,pre-drill the wood first O course.
But even good cigar boxes w a humi pack and that in a big zip lock works remarkably well,,@ 66f Degrees.

Re: Freezidor?

If it has some odors to it try some activated carbon or some baking soda. Activated carbon can be found chea in pet stores. If you go with the activated carbon route try some cat liter crystals. Some people do not like them compared to Heartfelt Beads but some do. I have my main humidor humidified with heartfelt beads and I love them but all my other humidors are filed with cat liter crystals and they stay in the 68 range. Here is a link to the Puff discussion on the subject. Heartfelt beads or cat litter beads?

Re: Freezidor?

Thans for all the help guys. I have been really busy at work lately and haven't had the hance to work on it.

My only real concern right now is; I don't have close to enought cigars to fill it up. I have read on here that a humidor of any type will have trouble holding humidity when it is close to empty. What shold I do until I can get it filled? Also, it is in my garage (my wife would kill me if i drag that thing in the house) so how do I keep the temp down?

Re: Freezidor?

I have heard of people putting empty cigar boxes in their humi with the filled boxes to help get the humidity stable.

It makes sense to me that the boxes would absorb the moisture even without cigars inside them.

Re: Freezidor?

If needed you can get empty wooden cigar boxes from CI. They sell 10 for $19.95 or something like that.
