I've stored many cigars in my desktops and cooler(s) for many years.... side by side, some cellophane wrapped and some without it.... and have had no flavor or other problems.

I've always taken mine off...but the added handling security does make a good point. My next question would be, if leaving the cello on, would you have to keep your humidity level up higher than 70% to insure that the cello sticks suck in enough humidity?
