cigar storage

I m a newbie and this is probably a simple question . Is it better to keep cigars in the plastic wrap or take them out before leaving them in your humidor? Or does it not matter. thanks

Re: cigar storage

This question gets asked often and opinions vary on this subject. Personally, I leave them on if that's the way I get them.

You'll get alot of opinions to help you decide what's best for you.

Here's that latest discussion which will give you an opportunity to read some of the members thoughts. Keep plastic wrapper on cigar or take off?

Yup, you'll probably find people to be 50/50 on that answer. I myself like the look of my cigars, so I take them out. The argument for/against is they might age a bit faster out of the wrapper, but are a bit better protected inside. You'll be fine either way.

I keep them in. I just like the extra line of security to prevent damage to my sticks!

That is the rule I go by.

Cellophane is permeable so your cigars will still receive the humidity through it and it will help protect against handling.

Re: cigar storage

Real cellophane is a semi-permeable substance. It will pass water vapor, but it takes a while. Put a drop of water on it, it will bead up and roll off. Some manufacturers use plastic sleeves, which are not permeable at all. If you are going to keep the cigars for months or longer, it doesn't make any difference, as long as the sleeve is cello. If you are going to smoke them in the near term, take the sleeve off.

Re: cigar storage

I tend to leave mine on, especially if I'm mixing brands in the same humidor.

Re: cigar storage

Will the flavor change when different cigars are stored together for long periods of time. I know age can bring more flavor or.... at least I think I know. Is there a time limit to how long you can keep cigars?

Most collectors feel that it takes many years for cigars to "marry". Also age does not bring more flavor but rather it rounds out the flavors.

Re: cigar storage

As a newbie with little storage, it doesn't matter IMO. When you start finding cigars that you do like buy a box, set it aside in a cooler or wine fridge. Good idea that works for me is take some of the sticks out of the cello and compare over time which works better. That's just my 2c.

Re: cigar storage

I take half of them off and compare....

I really see no difference personally...

There was a guy on here that posted, he keeps them on and cuts the cello right at the foot of the cigar...

Re: cigar storage

I think they look rather classy without the wrappers, but I've been leaving mine on just to minimize wear. Probably overkill, but every little bit to reduce damage is a good thing in my book.
