ways to lower temps

well summer finally reached us in new england. I haven't had to run a fan or even install our window ac units yet. In fact, only half of our windows are open.

well it has stared to actaully get over 70 in our house now, so my humidor is in the mid 70's. for temp, and abpout 70-72% humidity. obviouslt a little too high for comfort.

In attempts to lower the temps, I have tried to put the humidor in the closet, under the bed, under a thick blanket, and just last night into a small soft sided cooler. ( only have a small 25ct humidor)

The temp hasn't changed really yet, but I need to get this under control. I just loaded it with a Pepin sampler a few weeks ago.

Next step might be to skip a 300 plus ct humidor and go straight for a vinotemp, since from what i understand they do a better job at temp control.

any suggestions for the time being?

Re: ways to lower temps

I'm in a similiar situation. We move in about three weeks so I will have a basement which will be plenty cold. But for know I have my two humi's place in the center of our Apt (we are on the 3rd floor and have about 900 sq feet). I've been staying right around 71F, with some fluctuation. tTe Ms. won't let me drop the AC any lower than where it is set (77). Our place is grossly ineffienct, but I've manage to be ok for the time being.

I'd try keeping in the middle on you place, a hall closet or bathroom (under the sink). Stay away from rooms that are exposed to afternoon and evening sun and keep the shades down to block the light.. I found a good few degree differences from these areas becasue if the sun exposure and the heat that radiated from the walls.

I find the basement is a perfect temp during the summer usually never over 70. but not everyone has one.

Re: ways to lower temps

i have a field stone basement, so, it is a bit on the damper side, I might try that though, but might be at risk for to much moisture than

it also isn't much of a place to hang out in, but it might work

Re: ways to lower temps

Get 65% Heartfelt beads and put them in dry. That will pull the RH down, and keep it down, in the basement. Once they level out at around 65%, charge half of them. I really wouldnt worry about temperature, until it starts to hover over 75d.

If you do decide the basement is your best option, just be sure not to leave the lid open any longer than is absolutely necessary. No "window shopping", as mold and mildew love basements. Open it up, grab your stick du jour and close it quickly.

I have my humidor stored in the basement, which is nice and cool. Not all have that option though =/

You definitely have a different problem than I do. In the Dallas area, we are ending July with something like 16 100+ degree days. I wouldn't know what to do with highs just now getting into the 70's.

I'll remember that when all us Texans are sitting out on the patio in shirtsleeves on Christmas Day.

Re: ways to lower temps

I'm in the same boat. I got a 50 ct TC humi and it's frickin been in the 90's here in the Seattle area for awhile now and got to 106 today! My house has no A/C and has been 90 inside the house.

I'll take some suggestions too! Basements are a rarity in Seattle because of the rain...

Re: ways to lower temps

I don't have your problem. We have zoned central a/c so I just leave that part of the house running at 75 when we're out and turn it down to 70 when we're home. Gotta pay the price at the cabin to keep the whole place at 75 when we're not there. I know most people can't afford that but here's a cheap alternative:

Oops, I need to have posted 30 messages before I can post a link. Sorry Google vinotemp cigar humidor. There's some decent looking ones that don't cost too much.

Best of luck to you.

I can't say I envy you Texans. I have a brother that lives in Galveston and I've been there in the summer. But I'm sure you manage to keep your cigars ok.

Last Christmas morning my youngest daughter and I went out for a ride on our bikes. She on her Sportster and me on my Wide Glide. It was 40+ in the Boston area but we been out in the teens. Been a tradition for us as long as it isn't icy or a lot of snow on the roads.

Re: ways to lower temps

I feel your pain. I live in Alabama and days here are 90+ My problem isn't so much keeping the temp down inside, it's having to keep the AC at a constant 70 degrees even when I leave town for a week. My power bill was almost twice what it was last month! But, I figure that that's a small price to pay compared to ruining my sticks.

Re: ways to lower temps

I have a question. Being new to this I am wondering if keeping the Temp at 70 or is it that they just should not go over 70? Also is there a range it should be between?

Thank you.
