Damn Beads are driving me cracy

Hi Folks
I am probably over OCD on this one, but I can't keep my hummi's at 70%rh.
I have gone to the 70 % beads and all four hummi's are 75%.
I charged beads as directed and the RH is 75 on digital devices.
In looking at the beeds today they have lost 1/2 thier volume in 5 days.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
AL.....Smartbull

I guess the first question is have you calibrated your digital devices?

The next question is how long have you had the humidor? Sometimes seasoning these can take 3 days or more if it's new. just going step by step.

What does lots half there volume mean?

Personally I would not have charged the beads if your looking to bring down the RH. Take them out. Dry them out if they are in a nylon or bag dry them out with a hair dryer or simular.

If the ambiant RH is not drasticly different then the RH you desire then crack the humidor to try to make it easier for the RH to get down.

The beads work but if watched it takes more time. Once you get them in the grove they are rock solid but they are not as "active" as most would like they take time to work.

PS I find when beads are charged they initally bring up the RH I believe it is due to the water used to charge the beads remains past what was "absorbed" by the beads.

Re: Damn Beads are driving me cracy

Well, that's confusing. Maybe take the beads out and watch the RH. See if it goes down. Something funny going on for sure. I'm sure some others will check in after the weekend with better advice than I can give.

Hope it woks the beads should absorb the RH above 70 which will also charge them so they release RH when and if the RH drops below 70

Could you of recvied a bunch of over humidified cigars?
I know the beads should pick up the extra humidity.
Did you put in the beads with only 65% or so wet (clear)?

If they are all now clear that is just saying they soaked up all the extra humidity they can. Just dry them out a bit and put them back in to soak up the reast of the extra humidity.

Re: Damn Beads are driving me cracy

Drying out the beads is a good idea. What is the RH in the room? If the RH is >70% outside the humi you need to have dry beads to keep the humidity down. I had that problem in the basement and added a dehumidifier to solve the problem.

Re: Damn Beads are driving me cracy

i have found in the past that the 65% beads do a better job of keepiing at 65% than the 70% do at keeping 70%.

I have the 65% and in the summer i keep them at about 20% charged and in the winter i keep them at about 60% charged. my rH is pegged at 65% all year.
