Newbie question on heartfelt beads

Just beginning to get a little more serious about smoking and I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on heartfelt bead tube. My humidor is 840 cubic inches. Should I buy the 2 ounce tube that covers up to 1080 cubic inches or the 4 ounce tube that covers up to 2160 cubic inches? Is there a downside to buying a tube that covers more than twice the size of my humi? Also, I have read a lot on here how the bead tubes pretty much regulate themselves by both adding humidity if needed and absorbing humidity if there is too much in the box, is that correct? If this is the case, is there a real need to buy a digital hygrometer? Thanks for your responses.

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

hi jason,welcome to puff!
the beads are the best imo.
too many is better than too little.
some don't use a hygrometer with them becuase they are that good.
i use both because i beleive in the better safe than sorry thing...

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

I have heartfelt beads in one humidor (almost double what is called for) and in my new additions I went with RH beads from getthepuck.com/cigarmony.com. Again I have more that what is called for, 8 ounces in about 3200 cubic inches. I also added a puck 100 to my desk top humidor. I have digitial hygrometers but they are only good to tell when I need to add water to the beads (which is almost never)

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

Welcome Jason

I have heard that its better to get a little more than you need. But make sure not ALL of them are clear when misted down. There is an approx %... I want to say 80/90; but I may be wrong. This is in case the humidity gets too high then the beads have room to absorb the "extra" humidity.

Think of them as like a humidor, you think a 100ct is enough until you get a Vinotemp 28 like I did. hahaaa

Buy two, one ounce 65% tubes. Place them as far apart in your humi as possible. EX: If you have two shelves and a floor, place one in the upper right and one on the lower left. Overkill is good, but sensible placement is better!

Also, know that the tubes, because of their encasement, are less efficient than beads placed in a petrie dish, or mesh bag. The tube construction (vents) simply does not allow for as much air circulation as other media.

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

Either option is good the more beads you have the "quicker" the recovery time will be.

If you are one of those proud new papa types and are going to worry constantly about RH get the more beads your RH will bounce back quicker after you open and look in.

But personally I suggest you buy more then you need because when you expand to a bigger Humi or by another Humi they will come in handy

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

Everyone has given you good answers.

The amount recommended is a minimum for a given volume of space. Using more beads than the minimum will help the humidor recover quicker when the lid or door has been opened and the extra will increase the length of time before the beads need to be re-hydrated.

Re: Newbie question on heartfelt beads

A) You can NEVER have too many beads in your humi.
B) You'll upgrade your humi soon, so the extra beads will go further to maintain the RH in the larger space.
You might as well order more than you think you'll need, even if you don't use them all right now. It'll save you on shipping another batch soon.
