At what point should I get a humidor?

I'm pretty new to the whole cigar scene but was wondering at what point you guys would suggest it would become wise to invest in a humidor? Right now I smoke about three/four cigars a week and just run up to my local cigar store to get them. Are there any advantages to getting a humidor worth me spending the money that I'm not getting by not investing in one?
Thanks.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

Since you signed up here, I'd say grab a 125 count humi right now. If you look at the online retailers out there, you will find that the sticks you are buying at the B & M can be gotten for probably 25-40% less. This will cause you to shop more than usual and continue buying in which case you must store your precious prizes accordingly which means you need a humi NOW! If you are spending $25-$30 per week on your sticks you can probably afford most boxes of 20 from certain places. It's a slippery slope, when I joined here, I was smoking seriously for 10 months and had a 25 count humi. Now I have 2 20 counts, 1 100 .count and a 400 count. Prepare for the future of this great hobby. You will thank me later. This is my stash after a year of being on this forum: My stash

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

It's really never too early to invest in a humidor. I only smoke 1 cigar a week and I have a 100 count humidor thats about half full. When I first started smoking I went out a bought a 25 count humidor for 30 bucks at a local shop, and outgrew it within a few weeks. Go big or your regret it.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I started out with a 20 count humi and it worked fine for several months. No sense investing in something big till you need it. I still use the first humi purchased for dry boxing.

On the other hand, if you are like a bunch of us you may as well purchase a 3000 count cabinet and start building a walk in.

You decide...

The advantage of buying singles is you get to smoke a variety. Thats a good way for a noobie to begin. I envy you for having a BM nearby to stop in often.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I'd go with a imperfect. I got mine at Cheap Humidors for 60 bucks. That's about half off. Its a 125 count. I can already see it won't take long to fill and you can still get a variety of smokes, just buy samplers. Some places will let you build a sampler or buy singles. CI has a deal where every 5th stick is free. I got 20 quality cigars for about $90. Not C-bid cheap but a decent deal and free shipping.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

Im gonna go out on a way different strata. Go to that B&M youve been paying rent for and hit them up for a humi-quality cigar box. They will hold 20-25 smokes and will get you by while you shop online for a bigger box. Think seriously about parting together a coolidor. Get some flimsy boxes and bust them up to line the insides and go from there. A medium to large desktop and a cooler will see you through this afliction for a long time.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I think you need a humidor 3 days after you relized you liked smoking cigars.

About the time you realized you should have bought a humidor is the point you should have probably bought one 3 times bigger.

Humidor advantage -

It allows you to take advtanges of sales

It allows you to share with your friends

Deciding you want a cigar does invovled a drive - saves the enviorment too (less driving)

It allows you to have you new favorite cigar at your finger tips

Humidors are great conversation pieces and can be nice furniture

You can make sure you cigars are being stored properly and at the temp/RH you prefer

It allows to stock up in the event of emergencies

There is a certain pride in owning and taking care of your own Humidor that is stock with your cigars

It is a antidepressant - it I am feeling low I simply have to stick my head into my humi and take a deep breath of the cool moist smell of fine cuban tobacco mixed with the intoxicating undertones of spanish cedar - its a fine pick me up

** not having a humidor of some type is like being a driver/collector of fine cars with out a garage.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I have been smoking for about 6 months. started with a tupperware humi. Went to a Revello Jar and now just bought a 50 count Humi. I have been buying different brands and kinds of smokes. Found a few I really like so its cheaper to buy a bundle or box online and keep them on hand then running out and buying a few at at time. Buy a 50count and when you go to the local shop buy 2 of each smoke one now age one for later.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I would definitly get a Nice size humi ASAP. You have joined the puff.com forum and that is step one to going down the slippery slope of cigars.

I started with a 20ct a few years agoa dn never smoked that much. I was the same way as you; went to my shop and smoked that was it. Now I do alot of smoking in and online buying, 2 years later I have a 1000ct cabinet and a cooler.

Basically it is never to early to get a humidor, The hard part is figuring out how big of one you should get.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I see a pattern here. Humidors are like tool boxes. Once you buy one, you have to fill it up.
That said, mine holds ten and I'm about to buy a bigger one. I like the one that holds 150.

Only been smoking for a few months but I started to collect a small selection for singles and on everyones advice I bought a Humi. Went big and its a good thing not to long after its arrival I got bombed and well its stuffed and I have no room in it anymore.

Just an idea. With how much you are smoking I would look for a 150-300 count reason being they generally only hold 50-60% of what they say they hold. The reason I say this if you buy smokes by the box or even by the 5 pack they usually get much more affordable than buying them as singles which in turn would pay for your humi. I bought a 225-300 ct and I have maybe 130-140 smokes in it. I do though highly recommend it though as I got a sweet deal on it and its been holding RH like a champ.

I found my Treasure Dome on C-Bid for 80-90 bucks and have since modified it to take heartfelt beads.

Just my 0.02 hope it helps

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I have a nice entry level 50 count that I picked up from BB&B for like $30. Its not perfect, but it holds temp and humidity level and its not bad to look at. As I am not a box buyer, I am unlikely to fill it up too quickly. But, I will be upgrading before too long.

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

I started out with a Southport Large Humidor 120 count I think it cost me about $100 plus shipping. The others are right you will fill it up fast, buying online is cheaper than running to the stick shop every other day.

I too did that until about a year or so ago.

But it will become addictive!

Re: At what point should I get a humidor?

The point at which you click this link is when you should buy a humidor.
http://www.cigarsinternational.com/sa986
If you decide that this is a hobby you wish to pursue, then at least a: you've had a small sampling of some nice sticks, and b: when they're gone, you have a place to put a few more!
