Salt test woes

After 9 hours, my Wal-Mart hygrometer is still reading 61%. It's either very wrong, or I'm doing something wrong. I was hoping you guys could look at my test and tell me if I messed up.

The bag is sealed with the double Zip Lock zipper, and I folded it/chip clipped it for the hell of it.

Re: Salt test woes

you have to wait longer than 9 hours. More like 24 to 36 hours. There should be some threads on the subject. Do a search and it will bring up tons of info on it.

Re: Salt test woes

I've read a dozen articles. I was planning on leaving it in for 36 hours, but I thought that it was strange that the hygrometer hasn't moved from 60 after 9 hours (now something like 15 hours).

Re: Salt test woes

You might try the Boveda calibration pack - have used them with 4 different hygro's - very accurate on all.

Re: Salt test woes

1. Use Boveda pack, moe accurate I have found

2. I have gone thru about 11 Walmart hygrometers until I found 2-3 accurate ones but you can always make a note on how far your off

3. Try some other brands of Hygrometers

Hope this helps

Re: Salt test woes

I have Walmart hygrometers in all of my humidors. I agree with slyder that they tend to be off by 2-5%. I purchased one Xikar hygrometer that can be calibrated. After it was calibrated, I simply placed it in each humidor next to the Walmart hygrometer. After 48 hrs., I compared the difference and noted the difference on the front of the Walmart hygrometer. I found this to be convenient because I only had to do one salt test to calibrate the Xikar hygrometer. I also rotate the Xikar hygrometer from box to box to keep an eye on the Walmart hygrometers. Probably a little OCD on my part.

I tend to leave mine for 36-48 hours for best results. Then after i write the difference down i redo the test to make sure it was the same.

I'm now doing this as well.. Though the Bodeva website seems to be a bit slow with their shipping.

For future reference - I use the cheaphumidors site for things like this - they airmail out and I get it in a couple of days.
