New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

The Digital Hygrometer that came with my first humi said that it did not need to be calibrated, because it was done at the factory. Is this true? I know I can use the salt test to verify but is that even neccessary?

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

I would verify it. There's really no harm in taking a couple days to make sure it's accurate.

I would vote for yes. I just don't think you can be too careful when it comes to storing your stix. You will kick yourself later if you have a mold problem.

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

I have learned to test them. I have some that are advertised by the manufacturer as never needing testing that didn't make the test - and can't be adjusted. You either just learn how much to adjust when looking at them or buy the adjustible type. Whichever type you have, or get in the future, I suggest testing them all.

Testing is simple enough that it just makes sense to do it. Probably find out that it is right on, but then you will know for sure.

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

Like everyone else said, make sure you calibrate it. Few days of work will save a lot of headaches and money wastes in the future.

Cheers,
Brad

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

i just bought a caliber III digital hygrometer and it says NOT to salt test it in the manual. Should i do so anyway? I cant see any reason that salt testing the digital hygrometer would have any impact on its effectivness. What do you guys think?

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

We have extremely expensive hygrometers at work and they have to be calibrated. Have purchase 7 cigar hygrometers for home and have not had one yet be on when tested. The one I got from Radio shack was pretty close.

Re: New "Digital" Hygrometer ?

Short way to skip the labor of tests, simply go inside your B&M's humidor and test it. My B&M actually tests everything with you present before the sell it to you. But, if you bought online, I'd just see if the B&M would tell you their settings in their walk-in, then check your hygrometer to see if yours is accurate.
