Is it worth it?

Hey guys I have a Sunbeam 8 bottle wine cooler fridge that was sitting in my storage and was wondering is it worth trying to use as a humidor?
The highest temp setting is 66*.It has 2 racks with the bottom rack about a 1/2 inch of the floor.I dont have much of a stash atm and thought this might be a great way to get one started with out to much effort.
If this would work seeing how it is small what modifications would be needed to get it going?

Cheers

Re: Is it worth it?

Welcome to Puff.

As for the cooler, as long as you can fit your cigars in there it should work just fine. I believe most people with wine coolerdors set them to the highest temp available, which is usually around 66-68F so you will be fine there. You'll also need some form of humidifier. Most use beads in their wine coolers. If it has the weird shaped metal racks in it, you may want to replace them with spanish cedar shelves.

I think it would be worth it. For piece of mind that your cigars are at optimum temperature if anything.

Is it a thermo-electric cooler?

Yes its is.

I will probably want to get rid of the racks it came with and put some cedar in their place.Where do you get cedar from Home Depot/Lowes or online? How would you guys set up the inside? The lower shelf is only 1/2" from the bottom so not a lot of room under there if I use a cedar shelf and put heartfelt beads/drystatmist under it.I could use the stick on ones and put them on the side which may be a better option.

Any AZ guys have suggestions on humidity? How much beads or drystatmist do you use?

Cheers

I haven't been able to find it at Home Depot or Lowes. You can't use regular cedar, you need spanish cedar (more like mahogany than cedar). I don't know how your cooler is laid out, but you could probably just put the beads on top of the lower shelf or move the lower shelf up one level.

Re: Is it worth it?

I just looked an 8 bottle up on line. Newegg shows an 8 bottle Sunbeam. If yours has those dimensions a half pound of beads would provide more than enough humidification.

Heartfelt has a caculator so you can determine the amount.

If it is that horizontal type, your might want to consider removing the shelves. Initially you can store your cigars in cedar cigar boxes. I usually get mine from a local shop free.
If you decide you want to use shelves or trays you can always do that after you see what your needs are.
