TV display cabinet=humi?
In light of looking for a new humi i stumbled across something i had not before thought of- the TV display "unit" (im drawing a blank) in my basement has two "cabinets"... one on either side.
The closest picture i could get was this- ![]() Basically turn one of the side "cabinets" into a humi. I would need to "seal" the door off with some rubber, but the back has holes in it for wires and such. Anyone think it is doable? Bomb |

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
My thought is that you should line the inside completely with spanish cedar.

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
How are you with the wood working? You will want to replace the thin fiber board with something stout (oak, mahagony). Maybe instead of a rubber seal make it like a real humi. The floating liner that seals the cabinet.

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
The wood working isnt a big deal. My first thing would be to change out the back board.

The humidor would be hellish to keep cool enough if you run the tv often. they put out some crazy heat

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
hate to say it but, go buy a big cooler and smoke a bunch of cigars for the grief you just saved yourself.
Then spend a the difference in cost on some nice smokes and congratulate yourself on your wise decision as you place them in a more temp and humidity controlled environment. Now I think that he might already have a coolerdor and wants something that looks nice. Shrugs.

Can be done if you have the tools, patience and stock to do it with.
Good luck. It will be a cool looking project when done.

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
Agreed. However, you will likely have issues with (i) humidity maintenance / seal, (ii) expansion/warpage (due to the humidity differential between the interior and exterior of the cabinet), (ii) unpleasant odors from the original wood (can be alleviated and can use a Spanish cedar lining, but given the warpage issues you have to be careful that you allow the cedar to "float" a bit on the interior and allow for expansion / contraction), among others. If you are willing to replace some of the panels with MDF or something else that has limited expansion / contraction and take your time with the project, my guess is that it is very doable. You might want to email Bob Stabell to get some ideas. He has been very helpful to others who have tried this sort of thing.

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
Sure it is. And yes there are a few items to make sure you get right like making a seal for the door - replacing the backboard with real wood would help - and lining with Spanish Cedar a big plus - but none of them are a must. Let's face it - all a humidor has to do is be able to keep a stable RH. Long as you can do that it will work. Good luck with it all and take pics to post! ![]() Ron |

Re: TV display cabinet=humi?
Thanks for the advice.
For the record, there's no TV involved. The side cabinet is seperate/stand alone so it will just sit caddy corner in my living room. I'll replace the backboard and see what happens. |
