Top rack not as humid?

Now this may really sound stupid but has anyone noticed that the cigars on the top tray of thier humidor are more brittle than those below? Looking through my stash today I noticed more "crunch" with those on the tray and a softer feel to those on the bottom.

Granted the credo is mounted below the tray so this is probably the reason, but it got me to thinking that my hygrometer is on the tray and the credo is underneath...are my readings off???

Doesn't sound stupid at all. Moist air settles, it's heavier. If you have a tall cabinet humi this can be a problem solved by a fan. Otherwise your OK

Re: Top rack not as humid?

I have 100 count humidor with a tray on top. The humidifier is kept on the bottom. If I put too many sticks on the top tray it ends up blocking the vents and the moisture dosn't get to the upper cigars.

I'd like to put a little fan in, but I think my humi is too small for that.

Re: Top rack not as humid?

In my 150 count, I keep the humidification device on the bottom, and the hydrometer on the top. The bottom is closer to 68% RH, and the top closer to 66%, so I keep all my ready so smoke stuff on top.

Re: Top rack not as humid?

depending on how big your humi is, you may need to invest in a small fan that will circulate your air every 3 or 4 hours for a very short period of time.

in my humi, i have mine set to run for 10-15 minutes every 2 hours.

if you do a search, you can find more info. i think Mocobird posted a topic about installing fans, and i know DaveC posted a topic on how to set up an "Edison-a-dor".

Re: Top rack not as humid?

The humi I have is only a 300 count with just under 100 in there. I just keep 12 or so nice looking smokes on the top for show...its a glass top. Sucks to be vain.

Jsabbi01 had a pretty good idea IMHO. Just measure the RH at the top and bottom, it shouldn't be that different, his is 3%. A lot of people like 65%. If your reading is off is a different question, do a salt test calibration to find out.

Re: Top rack not as humid?

I have the "Mocobird" contraption in my Manassas and it helps alot. At first I was still getting a variance of 2-3% but things have stabilized since then.

A search for "humi-fan 101" will show a thread chock full of pics and directions on converting a computer fan into a humi-fan.

Re: Top rack not as humid?

I put a pound of Heartfelt beads at the top of my (closet) Humi to keep things balanced at the top but after reading that other thread I will definitely be putting together a Mocobird system but I think I will go with at least four fans in the corners angled in a way to circulate it around the entire unit.

Re: Top rack not as humid?

I wasn't getting enough air distribution with my cigar oasis Plus so I added the fan. the fan on the CO+ doesn't turn on enough to be truly effective --- only when the humidity drops a bit.
