Wine Coolidor Time!!!!

I bought this unit last night! The Haier 20 Bottle Wine Cooler.
I have some beads on the way and a fan that just needs to be wired.
I am having some temp problems though, at the top it is 65 degrees
but the bottom is around 56 degrees. I am guessing that the fan will
even this out some? I have some empty boxes in there now. I will
post photos soon!

Worst case: if the temp averages between 58-60 degrees will this affect the cigars any?

Hi Jgrimball -

I'm new to the site, but I got a nice chiller today also so I'll definitely be interested in your progress. Let me know how the temp turns out. I can't wait to start using mine. After finding this site and reading all these posts last night I got all emotional and went for it today. I followed IHT's instructions and drove all over town trying to find the stuff. I'm waiting on the beads to arrive and then I'm going to install the fan. Where are you going to put it in the cooler and I guess I put the wires through the hole in the back....?I was thinking of using velcro to attach the fan. Whattdya think? Good luck...

I will probably put it at the bottom, using little zip ties to attach it to the rack.
I also bought some cedar boards to put on the shelfs! Smell so good!!!

Mean clowns scare me. It will look real nice and insulate you from rapid temperature swings. It won't keep the temp down over a long period of time in a too warm environment which is it's purpose.

In the winter I keep mine unplugged and in the summertime I just plug it in, as long as im hygrometer reads 67/65 or something remotely close to that its all good.

Re: Wine Coolidor Time!!!!

Hey Grim -

Congrats. The fan should even temp out some, but I don't think that a swing of 56- 60 degrees should cause any problems. The only real trouble from temp as I understand it is if it goes above 70 (as the dreaded beetles may hatch) and below freezing. If the temp swing is really severe, (which mine is) you can use something like this external digital temp control: to alleviate this problem.

As for humidity, I just have a pound of 65 RH beads at the top of the fridge. RH is rock steady, and it is maybe a few points higher at the bottom, but not enough to sweat it. I would just wire your fan to a digital timer to run about 10 min out of every hour or so... this should keep RH and temp consistent through the whole fridge.

One more thing: The cedar you bought for the shelves IS Spanish cedar, right? I only ask because regular cedar has way too strong of an aroma for cigars, and I wouldn't use it. Personally, I just keep everything in cedar boxes, and that seems to work just fine.

You have a great setup - your cigars should be very happy in their new home.

I definitely would. If you didn't specifically seek out spanish cedar, it probably isn't - the reason I asked is that its pretty hard to find locally, at least for me, and it is relatively expensive. Certainly a lot more than regular cedar.

If you really want to line with sp. cedar, check out www.rockler.com - seems to be the online source of choice.
