The ability to absorb and release moisture with relative ease, and it imparts a flavor that many enjoy. Other woods are suitable as well, so tradition is a part of it. Sycamore, mahogany, and others have been used as well. Spanish cedar is in fact a species of mahogany.

What they said. In addition other materials have been used extensively such as tin, brass, ceramic, glass and clay.

American red cedar is highly aromatic and not suitable for cigar storage. Your sticks will all taste strongly of it. I'd recommend against it very strongly. I don't know why it's even listed as an option on that page.

Western red cedar is the aromatic wood used in most closets and chests to protect from insects. Eastern is the same family, but not nearly as aromatic, to the point that if you use sap wood that has been kiln dried, there is almost no odor at all. Just stay away from the heartwood.
