"Credo Precision 70" issues

Hi,

Just received a new humidor as a gift from my wife. I think it holds about 125 cigars. It came with a pre-packaged Credo Precision 70. Either I'm doing something wrong or maybe there is something wrong with it but the unit is such a sloppy mess. I fill it about once a month with about a 1/2 oz. of distilled water. After I fill it, I place it on a paper towel and I keep turning it and it continues to leak out the slots for maybe 20 minutes or more. The obvious thing would seem to be that I'm over filling it but the RH is dropping from about 69 (right after the fill) to the low 60's by the end of the month and that seems pretty typical to me.

Anyone have any ideas, comments, recommendations?

Thanks!
R.D.

I am pretty sure that credos require a solution of propylene glycol and distilled water to function properly. Or what they call 'cigar juice'.

Edit: It appears that you are doing it correctly. The 'Special Care Solution' only needs to be added twice a year. It sounds like you may just be overfilling it.

This is from the directions I found:

Quote:
Refill: It is necessary to refill your CREDO as soon as your hygrometer indicates a relative humidity below 70%, about once a month. Refill with distilled water exclusively. Apply drops of distilled water through the slots on your CREDO and allow the liquid to penetrate into the foam. Repeat the operation until it becomes saturated and the liquid begins to drip out the underside. Carefully dry off any excess water and replace it in your humidor.

Maintenance: Twice a year, recharge your CREDO with the Special Care Solution, to regenerate the tensio-active substances.

My suggestion, replace the floral foam with beads from heartfelt industries. It makes it much easier on upkeep.

Edit #2: BTW, Welcome to the forums. Make sure you introduce yourself over in the New Gorilla Forum.

Thanks for the info, Sawyer. I've been reading the "sticky" posts about the beads and I really like that idea but I've never used them before. Sounds like the beads are pretty straightforward and easy to use. It's got to be better than the sticky messy wet florist foam. I gotta think I just got a bad one though because I previously had a "CAO" black plastic florist foam type humidifier and that one worked just fine in my smaller humidor. I'm not sure what the deal is?

Credo's work fine with dist. water only, in my experience. If you have overspill, you are overfilling. And I couldn't agree more with Sawyer when he says go for the beads. Hassle free and they work like a charm.

I was thinking you might not have properly seasoned the new humi by what you said about it constantly losing rh.

I'm using the 65% beads now and they work great!
No more sloppy mess.
